Not very familar with DOHC or 4 cyls for that matter, im a lt1 chevy person new to the dsm world. Well my 95 ive had for a week just developed a tapping noise that changes speed with rpm inside the valve cover area. Since i noticed it yesterday its gotten louder today. Take the oil cap off an you can hear it inside, i know a rod knock this is not a rod knock just seems like a tap of some sort. This pretty common or what could it be?

thanks!

I had a eclipse i swore was knocking, was loud as hell, motor had almost 200,000 on it already so we tore it apart and the crank and rods were in great shape. we redid the whole engine, it had to be a lifter that was making all the noise.

thanks for all the replys, its def a lifter issue its never constant it goes an comes. The other tapping noise im hearing looks to be the crank pulley it looks out of balance when i look through the passenger side wheel well where you can see it through the cut out its not making the normal circular motion its more bouncy and is making a tap noise. Ever see that?

No i haven't really seen that but its not impossible. I've seen bad balancers on other cars. It could be bent that or you thrust bearing is bad and the tapping noise is your crank moving. (thats worst case)

welcome to the infamous lifter tick that these cars suffer from :p
I'am not positive on a 420a but people say you can upgrade to 3G lifters and this takes care of the lifter tick(in most cases)
