91 GSX Engine noise question

1991 GSX pulled off the scrap heap, repaired, and driven for a year or so. CEL on randomly (no codes), but seems to run fair. Valve cover does leak at the top.

Sounds like either the belt is rubbing the timing cover or the harmonic balancer. Have you tried pulling the cover off to see if the noise goes away?

I have not taken the timing cover off yet, but I did wonder if it was the harmonic balancer. I'd heard (no pun) it made a clicking sound when as they go bad.

The car made the odd noise after it had been driven on highway a couple miles, then it made that noise at idle. When I started it this evening it didn't make the noise. The voltage output of the alt at idle is only 9 volts, so I am thinking the noise may be from the alt when it gets hot. Maybe the bearings?

I replied in your other post as well, but my thoughts:

That timing belt is rubbing somewhere. I cannot tell from the video, but it looks like excessive wear on the outer edges of the timing belt? How is the timing belt tension (Too tight could cause an idler to fail over time?).

Also, what happens to the noise when you rev it? Does it go away or get louder/higher pitched with the RPM rising?

I think it goes to say that you need to check the bolts holding that timing cover on, if all is well, then the problem is most likely inside of it. It shouldn't be hard to find a rubbing spot on the back side of the timing cover if it is indeed rubbing. Does your timing belt look frayed on the edge at all?
