Ok, so a while back i bought a 1995 Gs turbo'ed. As the amatuer that i was i did not ask the owner anything about the car. im 16 btw, so i just got so dazed from the looks that i just bought the car. Obviously the basics stuff was good. its running fine and everything. But i have a feeling that this car has a built motor in it, just because it pulls really fast, and looks like it has lots of mods! Even though turbo looks small. So i was wondering how i can figure out if the motor is built or not. Im guessing im going to need to take it apart. but is there any other way just by looking at it to see if its built or not? I know im a Newb and people are probably like this kid is retarded for buying a modded car thats turbo'ed without knowing the mods. but im 16, and i didnt really know until i did research.. So if you could help me out, that would be great thanks!
In this pictures you can see it has a turbo thats small, it has an HKS BOV, the Manifold looks like the stock one though. but im not sure. If its not built im probably going to build it later on like this summer.

How many lbs of boost does your gauge say? If you have one?

Thats the thing i dont have one, The car used to have one from what the holes they made looks like but not anymore. But im getting one for sure though. Im guessing that if its more than like 8 lbs of boost than its definetly built right? To be honest im really dumb with cars but im learning, So yeah is there any other way? I'll probably get the gauge like this weekend or next weekend.

I wouldn't just assume that it has forged internals because it runs good. It will run the same at the same boost level with stock internals as it will with forged. Forged internals will just handle more power. About the only way to tell is to pull the oil pan and look at the bottom of the pistons and the rods.

:idontknow:

Well about the only thing that will tell you is if you do a compression test then you might be able to tell if it has the more common lower compression forged pistons. My money is that it is not built. Either way though you will want to tear apart the block and check everything out before running more than 8psi. Our cars arn't made to be turboed so everything must be done right before pushing a lot of boost and if he cut any corners you probably wont know until something breaks.

Ok thx for the help guys! i was hoping that it wasn't built because i want to build my 420A, seems like a fun project to do. It will also be worth it in the end because you dont see so many turbo'ed 420A's pushing like 14 lbs of boost. So thanks!

No problem, my suggestion is decide what you want to do with the car (drag race, autox, fun DD) then you will have a better idea what goals to set as far as hp, suspension, tires and so on. Once you have all that decided THEN thats the time to figure out what psi you want to push and when you want it to build in the rpm ranges. Psi is just one fraction of the equation when it comes to your hp. Infact you could get more hp right now at the same psi by adjusting factors like fuel and intake temp.

At least you know your a newb.. IF you really want to know, which id suggest, you should pull the pan. Look for the rod caps, see if the are ARP 2000's. they will litterally say "arp 2000" 99% of built 420a's run those. If you have those, then the rods are most likely eagle, which means u most likely have forged pistons.

Im betting the engine is stock. It may look "blingy" but i see alot of entry level/ebay parts.

Why the tiny turbo is water cooled is beyond me..

I bet your running 6-8 Psi.

And there more boosted 420a's in the midwest then you think. There are actually a few in your area too LOL

All it wil cost you to find out is 5 qts of Oil, a filter and an oil pan gasket.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I will definetly check it out. And i will do research too, i was thinking of making this a street race car. But im not trying to push too much though. i just want to build my engine because i think it would be fun, plus i think my car is still slow even though its just my Daily driver right now.

I would leave it as it is until you wanna bump up everything bigger turbo, intercooler, exhaust manifold, etc. If your more HP your going to have to get internals that can handle it. Dam I wish some decent GST s or GSX's would go up for sale in my area. How much did you get the car for?

yeah ive decided to leave it as it is, as for the cost of the car it was $4500.

Not bad from what I've seen and heard you say about it. Looks like you got a decent pick Haha

Thanks! At the moment i am making it look like a 97-99 stock, I have tooken off the spoiler, have made the lambo doors stock, and about to buy the 2g front bumper. After that i will probably work on performance, most likely going to have a 16g turbo or something a little bit bigger.
