Alright Guys my next project for my car will be a rebuild of my engine... i plan to replace pistons, rods, and bearings...

What is would be good to replace to gain some power and for preparation to install a turbo? also how hard is this to replace these yourself if ive never done anything like this before... i have a few friends who i think could help out

If i decide to do this myself what tolls would i need to get it done

And if i decide to have a shop do it for me... how much approx. are you guys guessing it would cost for the install not including prices of parts?

Wow.

well if your going to rebuild, you may as well stroke it out you will get extra displacement which equals extra motor, and if you plan on adding a turbo i would go with lower compresson say 8:1 compressson, as far as price they veary from place to place, around me its 65 bucks an hour labor, and no matter what you decide i wouldent try to do it myself, but thats just me

ill do the little stuff but when it comes to total rebuild i just dont have the balls :D

also if you search the archives here and also in 2gnt there are alot of threads that talk about doin this and the tools and prices check it out :thumb:

If your asking this question then you can not do this yourself. For you I would reccomend a pre-built shortblock. I believe Howell is the only place doing these any more, however I could be wrong on that. As for stroking the motor, the only place that will do this without it being completly custom would be howell. I have hand problems with them in the past however if this is the route you desire to travel they are the only one in the game.

sorry... still learning about engine internals and such... pre-built shortblock??? what is that

a pre built short block, is a crate motor check this out howell automotive

thats what im going with 2.2 L stroker :thumb: unless i find something better between now and when i have the money :D

hmmmm that 2.2L stroker sounds nice with 8.6:1 compression... how much would an average shop charge to install this? and how hard would it be for me to do the "Proper wear-in" of the engine, that they mentioned? also ne ideas on the hp numbers for that engine?

anything id need to know about buying, installing, breaking in, and running one of these would be appreciated

i actually think the 420a block is a peice of cake, u need to have engine knowledge and shit, but like its not a advanced engine. I helped my friend take his out and do the internals its time consuming like a week to do but other engine work would probly benefit, if you know nothing about the internals on this engine or how the engine is broken up how to remove crank shafts i wouldnt recommend you do this.

Shop around. Just ask them the price to pull and replace the engine. Local Satan here wanted $1100 just to replace my head gasket. That's about half the work involved in changing blocks imo.

Another resource you might consider is the regional forums here and on Neons.org. Find out where local people take their engines for work (and since the Neon guys get a little more nutso with the 420a than we do they might have some ideas too).
