The previous owner of my 95 RS had a 99 motor dropped in. I'm wondering if there were any other factors that could've been effected that I should know about. Certain wiring, plugs, sensors, etc. that possibly were changed out as well. How would I know if I still have my 95 EPROM ecu, or if a 99 ecu had to be installed as well?

More than likely, the only difference in your car is the block. Sensors are the same (I dropped a 95 block into my 97), harness is the same. There is no need for another ECU as far as I know. If so, then I would have had to change out my sensors and all that when I went backwards to the 95 block. THhe only difference between your 95 2GNT and any other is probably going to be the main bearings are notched differently. :thumb:

If you're having any problems with the car, you might mention those.

No problems really, except for the general maintenance that's mandatory of course. I guess I get away with the 95 ecu, and a 99 block with less miles :D. I was just makin sure cause I have some extra connectors and what not, but i'm pretty sure their for added features my RS didn't come with from factory.

95 models were OBD1... 96 and up are OBDII.
I'm just about certain that's mistaken. I know it is on the turbos- DSM was one of the very first cars (I think VW did as well) to adopt OBDII, and all 2Gs have it. Although it wasn't required until 1996.

Uh oh...I just happened to look closely at the ecu, and it has what seems to be a production sticker on it. The sticker has a date of 12/29/98 OMG, which pretty much is yelling to me that it's a 99 ecu as well.

i cant believe im about to say it but defiant, i think your wrong OMG im pretty sure the 95's and early 96's were obd I.

Sorry GSGoingFast but all 2g DSM's from RS-GSX were all OBDII. I think some bugs were worked out from 95-96 though so there was a little change. My car was made in July 1994 and has the OBDII also 2gnt.com has the specifications on it.

Ok, so what's the deal with the 95 ecu's (EPROM) being different from all the other 2g's?

The EPROM ECU is designed to be upgraded in the event of unforseen complications. Therfore it was used in the 95 because it was the first with the OBDII. As for the 4G63 EPROM, I am not too sure.

well after searching a little bit on 2gnt.com i kept getting the same answer over and over. 95's ARE OBD I. they are basically OBD II, but they fall short on a couple requirements to make it OBD II.

did you read the links? actually i dont remember if it was in the links but im pretty sure it was, if not in another thread on there, but the obdII scanners work on the 95's, but there not fully OBDII compliant

Yay, we can finally get some of this nonsense sorted out.

As for which ecu I actually have, a couple of my buddies and I are getting together this weekend, and one of them owns a 99 GS. I'll just have to take a look at his, and see whether mine looks exactly the same, or if it is indeed a 95 EPROM that has had the software updated.
