3rd gear grinding?

a couple of weeks ago, my 3rd gear started grinding. It doesn't grind all of the time however.

-If I double clutch right, it doesn't grind.
-If I downshift from 4th, it grinds every time no matter what.
-If I upshift from neutral (been coasting in neutral for a few seconds or whatever), it grinds every time.

The fact that if I double clutch it right (almost at the rate of rev matching, catching the gear as the revs go down), I'm thinking maybe it's the synchros?

Any other thoughts/predictions/cost estimates?

It is.

The synchros can be wiped off of any gear.

i have a problem with 3rd gear grind. but mine is a tre trans and has done it since new.i hAVE A 91 awd and they built it to 90 spec and had to change some things when i came to pick it up. anyway i dont downshift into 3rd,grind hardcore, and upshifting grinds unless i take it slow. maybe they put in a worn out synchro?

How much does it cost to get a new synchro installed. Ballpark. Something my local mechanic will do for me, or is he going to bring me to a transmission specialist? No offense, but could you be wrong and could it be something internal to the transmission?

3rd gear synchros are a common problem in DSMs. Get some BM Synchroshift. That usually cleans it up a good little bit.

genrally when synchros go out its new transmittion time or rebuild time. And from your problem it seems that your syncros shot. I opted for a new tranny when my dodge truck synchro went out. So price a new transmittion and labor to install it if your not going to do it yourself.
