After a search I realize there weren't any (that I could find) pics of the 1g and 3g lifters side by side so you can see the HUGE difference in the top oil port. So here ya go.
EDIT: Found one pic about halfway through the 18 pages of the "lifter tick" thread.

PS I only had the car running for about 10 minutes 2 years ago so I don't really know if the 1g lifters ticked or were problematic. They were one of the very few used parts going back in this motor so I decided to upgrade them. Got a $10 coupon from ebay and ended up getting them shipped to the door for $69.95 total.

They are supposed to be genuine Topline/Johnson. I've heard of topline but am not familiar with Johnson.
As for how they compare...I don't have much to compare it with. My motor isn't back in the car yet and I only got to drive it for about 10 minutes 2.5 years ago with the 1g lifters before the timing belt had a "little" problem.:(

I bought a set of those revised lifters. Although I have to say one collapsed on me and made a horrific ticking noise. I think the quality control isn't the best but if you have a working set they are great.

Got the car running and a few of those lifters are making more and more noise. I think they either collapsed or didn't get fully flushed and bled. I also saw that it took some people several days of driving for the ticking to subside so I don't really know at this point. Can you tell if one is collapsed when you pull the valve cover?

EDIT: It was a loose cam gear making all the noise. Once I got that tightened up the lifters are VERY quiet (except when I removed them, bled them again, then put them back in they made a ton of noise for a few minutes then back to quiet).

Make sure you bleed them and collapse them before you install them and you should have no issue.

I pulled them out, bled them so they would collapse by hand easily then reinstalled. They were WAY louder after I did that. Took it for a drive and they were back to the "normal" loud like beforehand after a couple of miles. I think I'll leave them alone for a hundred miles or so. I've only got about 10 miles on the car since the rebuild.

Ya from what i have seen it is hit or miss on the topline HLA. I have seen more then a few that were loud and no good.

Just installed my new topline lifters this weekend. Soaked them in oil overnight, filled them up, bled them out, and installed them...Ticked like crazy for a mile or two. Brought her back home and.....*silence*---big_d

You guys are making sure to let them sit before driving once you have installed them for a few hours right? Also to bleed them with fresh oil?

basically this is how i installed mine.

Topline lifters from extemepsi.com, i opened em up, they were already full of oil, so i just did the paperclip trick.. found the spot, moved them up and down untill ALL the oil came out, and they stay colapsed by hand.. dropped them in.

Engine will start in a few weeks.

Sounds like you are good to go. However, before you go to start the motor make sure the lifters aren't stuck in the up position and that you can push on them and they go down but spring back up.

I have a question about the 3g lifters. I have a set of the 3g lifters that I used on my 6bolt swap but they are identical to the 2g lifters that came from my 98 GST 7bolt. Is there a difference between the 98 2G and 3G lifters? Is the difference as noticable as the difference between 1g and 2g?

I searched for it but couldn't find it. It was a comparison writeup between the three versions. Basically, if you are having hla ticking problems try the revised lifters. If you don't have a problem right now then don't worry about it.
PS They are actually relatively easy to replace with only removing the valve cover so you can really do them anytime you want.
