Seeing as the 4 cylinder 3g eclipse has the 2.4 litre motor, I was wondering , You guys think it would be able to put a 4g63t head on there like they do with the 2.4 litre spyder motors? Is the engine the same in the 3g 4 banger as it is in the 2g spyder? I mean If that can be done to the 3g then it looks like theres some potential on those 4 bangers, but you'd still have to figure out how to hook up the CAS and other things, but in theory, can it be done?

I don't think so .. I used to have a 3g eclipse and was going to attempt that swap and also build up the motor. Back when I was a member on their message boards "1badrs" made the most power and he had a fully built motor at around 20 psi making 360 whp. The motors are a little different than the NT spyders where ... for example this is a single cam and the spyders were dual. Compression ratios are also different. I don't remember if on the spyders the trans was on the drivers or passenger side of the car ... but I know on the 3g its on the drivers side. I think the only semi simple headswap was that off an evo 3 or 5 or something .. I forget. Nobody completed the swap last I checked because the heads were impossible to get for a decent price. I can look back at some of my old posts and refresh my memory. I know after much debating and actually buying a lot of the new parts for that car ( to turbo it ) I just said screw it and sold it for a gsx. The 3gs are crap and fwd also sucks. ( no offense to gst owners .. that's just my opinion )

youd have to check the specs on the block get the codes and make sure the deck is the same on the head and te block. if not it has to share the deck of a 64 block.

but then again what bolt is the 3g motor. is it 7 or 6. that may have a roll to play in it

No, the Spyders were also single cam.

You are correct though, being that the transmission on the 3g's is on the driver's side, a standard 4g63 head swap will not work (the Spyders has the transmission on the passenger side, like the 4g63 Eclipses). Maybe a swap would work from an Evo IV-VIII, but I am making no assumptions or guarentees. An Eclipse head would definitely not work.

Yeah probably the evo 4-8 then since they are reversed too

Would probably be easier to get a complete IV-VIII engine and ECU and be done with it. The stock 4 cylinder tranny would work.

yes thats right the 3g motor is reveresed just like the evo8 motor. I've already heard about evo8 swaps done in the 3g's. I'll see if I can find a link, but from what I've heard its a direct swap, you just switch trannies.

Someone did that in a galant which shares the same 4g64 as the 3g on the old club 3g message board. I forget which engine they used .. I think evo 5? I know the 3g trannies aren't the strongest either though so that's another obstactle down the road.

My mistake ... I thought the spyders were dual cam. I do know however that the nt spyder has a higher compression than the 3g motor.

Yeah, I think the Galant guy ("Clay" comes to mind), had an Evo IV motor. But then I heard the bottom end went out and the car is no more, or at least not in that form. He was using the auto tranny and it WAS holding up, but was going to do a manual tranny swap. With a 3G and a manual, a strong clutch is probably the only thing you need.

The whole compression thing was minor: 9.0:1 versus 9.5:1. But California Spyders had 9.0:1. 141hp 148 torque or 138/138 for Cali Spyders in 1999 versus 147/158 for a manual 3G 4cyl in 2001.

Still, the idea of having an Evo 8 powered 3G is intriguing. I wonder which board such an owner would belong to?
