sounds silly. but has anyone tried a 3.5 inch exhaust on the 1g or 2g TEL's. i tried searching but only thing out there is 3" and 2.5".

Yes....lots of people have done it. I'm pretty sure Buschur even sells 3.5inch exhaust. It won't really do you much good unless you are making A LOT of power....

Honestly There are much better places to spend money for performance than trying to get 3.5" tubing for an exhaust build. 3" is plenty for most ppl, the next step is 4" from the desiel trucks. I've not seen 3.5" except for special parts. So, unless you are going huge, the 3" systems available should be plenty.

I went 4" after my 2.5" system started being too restrictive, all the bends for the awd cars just complicated the problem. I had access to lots of leftover 4" from turbo desiel trucks so I just started cutting and fitting.

Since you are in baltimore, there is a guy here in lancaster, pa that did all of my fab work, including a 3.5 inch downpipe to a 3 inch out. Charged me 1k and it took 3 days at his shop. The guy does incredible work, his TIG welds are next to noone. If you need pics or info send me a PM.

People have ran 4" on our cars. I think they said 3" exhaust becomes restrictive over 600whp.

Speaking generally, a "3 inch" exhaust system becomes restrictive around 500whp.

You also need to remember about ground clearance issues with larger diameter piping.

I read something in turbo magazine a long time ago stating that 3in is restrictive after 500whp. Ive read 4in is good for over 800 whp. Ill find the magazine one day and quote what it exactly was saying it was interesting.

I am running 3.5inch piping on my car. and it is fine. I do agree with dsmunknown. You my have issues with clearence going to much bigger. If you are interested, you can contact a company called Raceparts Solutions. They sell everything that you need to make your own custom exhaust. they even sell V-band clamps that will allow you to take exhaust apart in sections. Ask for Darrin or John. The number is 561-375-6277.

How does 3.5 in exhaust sound?
Do you have a muffler to mate with this pipeing correctly>(inlet wise.)?

On turbo cars theres really no lose in going too big. I suppose the only place
itd hurt in too large diameter exhaust is during off boost situations, but who cares about the powerband then...!

i bought a gsx project and the car came with a 3.5 inch exhaust with a nice dynomax muffler all painted high temp black. looks pretty good. i just have to get a custom downpipe made with a v-band to attach them. thanks guys

The sound is alittle deeper than normal, but sounds really good. I am using stainless steel 3.5inch piping for downpipe, and 3.5inch aluminum for the rest of the exhaust. that is until i get to the muffler. By the way. I am using hks for my muffler.

is the inlet and outlet of the muffler also 3.5.
I want one like that because i dont want to do the big 3.5in pipeing and then choke it
down on the muffler.

If you get a mandrell bent exhaust system, then 3" is more than enough. Unless you pan on making a whole lot of power.

If you're planning on doind a crushed bent exhaust, then you might want to look at 3.5"

exactly why im doin 3.5 because im getting a deal on a crush bent exhaust system.

I doubt the hks muffler has a 3.5 inlet, considering their exhausts aren't even 3 inches. They might have a muffler that they use on the Supras that will have the right size inlet. Largest I saw was 75mm which is about 3 inches. You'll probably have to go with a magnaflow straight through muffler to find one large enough

Sorry to come in to the thread being a new person here, but reading on the different sizing for exhausts, do you guys recommend the 3.5?
I have a 91 TSi and currently the exhaust is just the downpipe and open pipe. (bought it that way) so as you can see, that needs to be fixed ASAP.
What would you guys recommend?
Right now all it has is the 16g small turbo, a BOV, data logger, ACT 2100 pressure plate & clutch, turbo timer, and Manley performance 35mm intake and 31.5mm exhaust valves, and Manley performace springs.
Thats basically everything, so I need an exhaust for it, so who best to ask then you guys :)

Thanks
~Michelle~

If you're not worried about horsepower, and not looking to be at the track; then you can get away with just going to a local exhaust shop and having them fab you an exhaust.

If you plan on building the car, then I would look into buying an exhuast system from a performance company. These systems will cost more, but they perform far better becuase they use on peice mandrell bends.

If your piping is press bent then you might think about going with 3.5" exhaust because the diameter of the pipe is smaller at the bend.
If piping is mandrel bent then 3" will be plenty. even 3" press bent is good for most people, unless you are looking to go past 400whp mark.

Well I'm not looking to go past the 400 mark although that would be great LOL I'm thinking some internals need to be replaced before that. :) Thanks for the information though Ill keep that in mind :)

Michelle, are you concerned with the flow of exiting gases (I mean, are you really concerned)? If you are, then read through this thread. Hopefully it will provide you some helpful info on what to look for and why. Here is another helpful link that should get you thinking in the proper manner of choosing mandrel bent piping over press bent piping.

I'm pretty sure that the apex-i gt cat back has 3.5 inch piping but they are pretty rare to come by.
