Hi guys I'm new and need help. My 97 420a n/t Eclipse has a check engine light and I'm pretty sure it's for my O2 as before that code came up and went out.

I have a low idle at around 500 rpm normally it's at 800 or 900. I did my timing belt it hasn't skipped or anything. New harmonic balancer belt, everything. Car still idles bad and feels bouncy if sitting like pa pa pa pa and bouncing on that. I don't know what to do. I have the new O2 and everything. I also have a exhaust leak.

And if i put car in reverse and reverse it tries to stall out.

Please help, I love this car and have big plans

Ive had this happen on my other vehicles. But not my 97 eclipse yet. (Still building her) but anyways i would replace your tps sensor. I would also check you iac sensor (idle air control) its even possible you could have a vaccum line leak. Wich would cause poor idle. Those sensors i listed are very cheap priced. (Ebay) i hope this helps you.

I can tell you its not going to be a o2 sensor try checking the throttle position sensor and one time on my 98 gs my coolant temp sensor connector was broken and it caused it to have a bouncing idle

Stupid question! But, U did make sure you was at tdc when u did your timing belt right? While im in the procces of rebuilding my entire 420a i decided to replace every sensor. My 97 eclipse gs had a blown head gasket when i bought it for $300. :hellyeah: So id would check and replace those old sensors. But this is just my opinion

Thanks everyone i will double check all those things first thing and i read that a o2 sensor could be a problem but ill take ur advice all and yes i put timing on mark i used the clamps snd straight edge to make sure and it seems to only idle bad when warm completely and in drive

That almost sounds like a bad egr valve. But not knowing if u have any mods, milage ect. Im kinda shooting in the dark. Also u say u have an exhaust leak. Have u found where the leak is? Stock exhaust manfolds are known to get stress cracks over time. Wich would be before your #1 o2 sensor. Wich would tell the o2 sensor something is wrong. But once again not knowing your car. I dont want to give u false advice.

Unfortunatly i dont know ware my egr valuve is located :( also my mialage is 192xxx and the previous owner had the motor changes as there is a newer sticker that says jasper engins on the block my car is all stock and yes i removed my heat shield and there is a crack in my headers the stock cast iron headers my car currently has no mods and the leak is behind the driver seat at the elbow it was on a lift and guy said that the welding rotted out but everything on the car is bone stock things i replaced were timing belt harmonic balencer tie rods brakes rotors windshild thermostat antifreze cap water pump

Your egr valve is attacted to your intake with 2 13mm bolts i believe. It a long metal tube that runs along the right side of your head into the egr valve its self wich is bolted with 2 bolts on the right side of your head. (Looks like a wierd space ship) has vacum lines attached to it as well.

Jasper is a very very good block!! I had one in a 87 camry. They originaly made motors for nascar.

But i would honestly replace your tps sensor n iac sensor. N check for vaccum leaks before i went replacing anything else.

Oh ok now i know thank you and yes but last owner had mechanics work on it and changing my water pump every bolt was put on sith lock tight i kid you not i was so sad to see that but ill check all those lines and could my injectors be clogged ?

Sometimes when I turn it on it wont really want to turn on

Also my check engine light came back on today and in drive instead of rolling a little it jumps

She just gave a new code now. P1494 Evap Code and I don't know this one. I'm sorry I'm such a noob on my DSM guys

Evap code. That could be cause by a few things. Make sure u have a good seal on your gas cap. But most likely u have cracks in your vaccum lines. Wich will throw that code P1494. Even a hair line crack on a hose will cause these issues.

No problem satatchi. Anything to help. I do alot of research on our cars to find the common problems n how to fix them. N or upgrade threw the problem.

Right now mine is just a block with pistons under my hood. But im rebuilding the whole motor better then stock for under $500 all new oem or better parts.

Any time u got questions just come n ask. If i dont no it, ill research it to find the best answer

Thanks and thats sweet bro and ill upload pics now

Yea thanks alot and i will and o2 sensors a bi*** to get out LOL and how about the shaking is it jist my leak?

if its mostly when warm you may want to check your crank sensor, back side of the block. when my buddies 98 gs started having idle/stalling issues, we found his crank sensor was getting oil fouled cuz the internal seals were shot.

when it was cold, it would start fine and run great, then break up as it got warmer and the sensor expanded, letting oil in.

also, check your map sensor and its port. same car, about a year after the crank sensor replacement, and the map sensor and port were gunked up with carbon and oil residue, idled like crap. cleaned the IM and port, worked perfect.

Crank sensor that a new one for me. Never knew it could cause those problems. But the map sensor definitly will cause those issues. Thats one reason why im doing the egr vavle delete to stop all the excesive carbon build up in the intake mani.
