So I own a 95 Eclipse GS and I was wondering if its a good idea to do a 4g63t swap if I was to turbo my car?

I've seen a lot of the posts about this but all of them seem pretty outdated. I've heard that its a reasonably easy swap, but I wanted to take it to you guys who probably know a lot more about my car than I do.

I was thinking that I just get the correct motor mounts for the 4g63t, and since the GST and the GS use the same frame that there might be a way that I can bolt or weld it on. And id probably would have to get a new ECU for it as well.

I'm mainly just wondering if its a reasonable swap. Thanks

Not a reasonable swap. For that money you'd be better off putting fresh bearings in your 420a neon motor and buying a pre-made turbo kit for it. THe information is not outdated; it's simply not often discussed anymore because people realized you're 99% better off finding a 4G63 shell and going from there.

ALternatively you could look into swapping a later style 4G63 into your chassis but again, way too much hassle unless you're a pensioner with tons of free time and money on your hands.

UNLESS your 420a chassis is insanely well preserved and has 0 rust, then it may be feasible to convert it to a 4G63. You will still need to cut, weld, fabricate, transplant certain parts so it would all fit.

As most people will tell you, sell the car and buy a factory 4g63t car. The motor and trans are on opposite sides. The only swap I would consider is a later evo 4g into it as stated above. Then the motor and trans are on the same sides. Online I’ve seen a few cars that have had this done without major fab work. The wiring aspect seems to be more work than the actually swap. Or you could turbo your 420 and have yourself a fun car also. I have personally turbo’d a 420 as a budget build and it is actually pretty simple. You would need a 420 specific turbo manifold and fab a downpipe, other than that you can use all universal turbo parts. A mega squirt or similar would be the best for tuning but I have an fmu on my dads car with a wideband and just a 255 on 10psi. The duty cycles are probably pretty high though but the car runs and drive extremely well for a “ghetto” fuel management system.

Ps we used a gst down pipe and cut the 90 off and flipped it and it bolted straight to the cat back and only had to fab about 8 inches of turbo elbow.

the thing that I don't really understand is the finding the 4g63 shell part. aren't the frames identical, because What I was thinking about doing is buying maybe the transmission and the engine, and getting the correct motor mounts.I know that the engines are oriented differently, but wouldn't it technically work. Or is there something about the GS frame that's different than the GST frame?

No the front frame rails are different

The front section of the frame is different. On a 2g gst the passengers side frame rail has a hump for the transmission to tuck under.

The 2g non turbo 420a cars have the transmission hump on the frame rail on the drivers side. So you would need to cut out the frame rail section on the passengers side out of a 2g gst spyder or gsx to fit the transmission and engine into the engine bay

Its honestly the dumbest engineering design and cost ive seen done just to make a base model vehicle with a different engine. By all logical standards the non turbo cars should have all came with the spyders 2.4 non turbo motor, and thats what ended up happening in the 3rd gen eclipse. I dont have the data from the mitsubishi costs at the time but the second gen eclipse had to have the worst profit margin of any car made in the 90's. I mean every single first gen had a mitsubishi engine, why why why.

So can it be done? Yeah.
Can it be done by a novice? Nope

you can swap in an evo4 or newer 4g63 and use a 2000 eclipse 4clinder manual transmission and bolt that in your 2gnt. But again your parts bill for the swap will be in excess of $6,000 after you factor in all the supplies and parts involved. And its not just a one weekend and done, youre talking about changing your entire way of life to be the eclipse guy.

Most people dont do that, a project car is always a project and even when complete you will need to spend your down time wrenching. By the time you spend 3 months wrenching on a car while driving another car to work you start to question why youre doing this to make 400hp when brand new sports cars come with them from the factory

The thing is if your asking I would not attempt the swap its not easy. You need both cars side by side. Everything from the harnesses to the power steering has to be swapped and that's the easy part. I had a crusty gst I used for my doner otherwise I never would have touched it.

ok that makes sence then i really thought all id have to do is just strip the bay entirely and weld or bolt on the correct motor mounts. but I guess not thanks for the help.

I hate to be that guy and I definitely don't like to discourage people, so I apologize in advance. I just dont want to see someone attempt it and then be killed because it wasn't done right.
na im not discouraged at all i asked for help I got it. its no big deal I just wanted to see if what people were telling me was true
