Cambridge,
So ive come to the decision that my Laser needs a head job timing belt slipped...My question is will a 2g turbo head bolt to my 1g non turbo motor and will the car run? and is there any performance gains in doing this swap........

2g heads have smaller ports. your just gonna hurt yourself performance wise. not to mention the thermostat housing is different and so are the cam gears (2g has cam sensor on cam gear itself). go with a 1g head and save yourself one of those infamous dsm headaches

Well I have a 2G head on my 1G block and it wasn't hard at all, though I used an N/A 2nd gen head. Just knock out the freeze plug where your cam sensor should go and it's fine. Cam gears are fine, mine runs awesome and has higher compression than stock, almost 200 across the board. I got a 2nd gen head rebuilt, with new cams for $150 so I couldn't help myself. I also notice the difference in the pull of the car, I like the 1G head a lot better.

even those you beat me too it the 420A (2g n/a head) is way different that our 4g63 being that is in a sepperate engine family but I could be misstaken

Are You sure you did not get a hold of a later Hyundai head? They were 6bolt small intake port and around 97/8 went with 2G ignition sensors witch would explane having to knock out the freeze plug. And when you did it did you also change the intake if not the port mismatch would be extream.(witch would explain the loss in performance)

+1^^^^^^^

2g n/a heads are from a 420a. you might as well be putting a b16 head on your car. you'll never get a 420a head on a 4g63. you must be mistaken unless it's a head from a euro. i agree with TGMX1, it is probably a later hyundai head.

i'm not saying that it would be hard to put it on of course it would be easy they are the same motor but i'm saying it would be not worth it. especially if he wants the MOST out of his NA car.

Okay, the guy told me it was a '92 4G63 cylinder head. It came with an intake manifold. I posted pictures and somebody told me it was a 2G head. I asked why there's a freezeplug where my cam sensor should go. Here's a picture of the setup. Note: I never looked up casting numbers so I'm going by here-say. I was really convinced it was a 1st generation head, any insight? It runs great so I was successful :]

yup looks like a Hyundai head judging from the odd intake manifold. that it not a 1g or 2g DSM intake manifold. looks good though you got it done right. i see that it does have the plug for the cam sensor but it also has the studs to mount it unless you threaded them in yourself prior to taking the picture. maybe somebody had a 4g63 head on there Hyundai and put the freeze plug there themselves. you never know

Oh crap that sucks!! I was totally lied to. Oh well, and yes, those studs for cam sensor were there. 2.0 N/A's are nothing special anyway so I'm not concerned. In a couple weeks here I am going to buy a blown turbo motor for my bench build :] I like these cars a lot, I had a great experience replacing that head... Funner than working on my Monte Carlo [I hate to say]. I'll let you guys know, this thing sure doesn't pull as hard but it's still a fun time on the freeway considering my old head was so nasty after 150,000.
