My forward and back shift linkage wont pull back far enough to engage first gear. I can put the car in first with the linkage disconnected, however with the linkage connected it goes in slightly and when i begin to release the clutch it kicks out of gear. If I hold it in place it kicks out and grinds.

The bushing near the shifter has some minor play and the bushing on the trans side has no play. How can I fix this? Is is possible to adjust the linkage on a 2g? Thanks in advance

Check the position of the brackets on the trans......make sure they're not bent or mis-aligned or mis-adjusted because if they are your never gonna get it in gear....
Question....did you have the trans out and then install a clutch? because if so your clutch pedal needs to be re-adjusted unless you used the appropriate clutch fork.....that can also cause what your describing (because the previous owner of my car caused permanent damage to the first gear syncros because of that)......

Cool Thanks, I will Check the bracket tomorrow.

and Yes I just changed the clutch, however I did search before posting this and the first thing I tried was to adjust the clutch, It didn't help.

id say recheck your clutch fork adjustment, the bent or messed up bracket is a good theory, it would be near impossible to bend it without noticing, you would have to pretty much drop your trans off the counter upside down with the bracket bolted on, they are really strong. keep us informed tho!

UPDATE

So I changed the spring in the transmission and now from a standstill I can slam it into gear and get it in 95% of the time, however when driving and approaching a stop I can slip it into first fully. Does this mean the 1st Gear Syncros are gone? Also when I put it in gear while moving it seems to go in more than when I slam it in while stopped. Is it bad to drive the car when it is possibly not fully in gear?
