Ok earlier last week I was driving my car and it was running fine...all of a sudden the tach started going crazy and jumping up and down and the car started misfiring really badly.....

i then pulled over and heard a loud clicking comming from under the dash area.....which leads me to believe this is a bad ecu but i pulled the ecu out just to check the caps and they werent leaking.....my buddy hooked up a computer to the car and it wouldnt let him read any codes (check engine was on) and it was giving him crazy readings like -40 degrees from the maf sensor and coolant temp sensor.....my car is undrivable right now.....what would cause this. Should i start with the TPS, alternator (heard that a bad alternator would make the power relay in the ecu go crazy and cause wierd problems) or just go ahead and buy a new ecu?

ok well i changed the ecu and the problem is still the same...any other suggestions? When i start the car it is running SUPER rich and there is alot of black smoke comming out as well as a horrible idle and the car wont rev past like 2 and if i give it too much gas it dies.....i also have to keep my foot on the gas to keep it on. also as i keep it on i hear that clicking comming from somwhere under the dash (mpi relay) and the tach jumps alot and the lights on the dash flicker (my abs, and srs lights are always on)

i replaced the isc and it still does the same thing..... i heard it might be the coolant temp sensor but i dont think that the coolant temp sensor would make my fuel pump relay go off continuously.....it seems like my battery is getting drained somewhere cause when i went to start it the battery was almost completely dead......so i thought the battery was so low it was causing this.....swapped batteries and the same thing? Any other ideas of what it might be....check wiring harness and everything seems ok

I had an alternator relay go bad on my car a couple years ago with the same result. It was located next to the boost control solonoid, a small 3-4 prong relay. Changed it out, problem solved. Another thing might be a crank pulley going out, usually you will hear it "squeal", but it might be worth a check anyway because it will effect the alternator operation.

The only problem I ever had with my tach being screwy was solved by replacing the transistor pack. It also plays a part with the ignition/spark so that may be why you are running rich as well. Check to see if you are getting spark in all cylinders.

if you were saying the CTS was reading -40, i would say its bad, or you dont have enough antifreeze in your car for it to read anything, because when its bad or cant read, it will just think thats what the cars temperature is, and toss a bunch of fuel in to compensate for it, and you also said it was running rich, so that could be it.

did you try starting it up after it cooled down? if so, did it run fine for a while then started to bog down again?

it wont run cold at all...does the same thing....i dont think its the coolant temp sensor because of the relay clicking and the jerking rpms.....i did some regrounding work today after i got out of work.....seemed to help free up my electrical system....but the problem persists.....i think im gonna try the coil pack tomorrow and maybe the transistor.....a 93 talon coil pack and transistor are the same correct? should just be plug and play right?

well i went outside to see if i was getting spark to all 4 plugs and i was..but maybe the voltage isnt enough so im gonna try the coil and transistors tomorrow anyways

are the coils and such the same on a 93 talon? The plugs look the same i just wanna make sure im not gonna mess anything up

ok well i changed the coil pack but not the resistor....i checked the plugs and cylinders 1 and 2 had gas on them from trying to start the car....cylinder 3 had no gas and 4 had a little (all of them were super black because im running so rich)....after i changed the plugs and coil pack things did not improve as the car started right up and had a very lumpy idle with alot of black smoke comming out of the exhuast (rich). also i cant rev the car almost at all becuase when it gets to 2.5-3k rpm the tach starts jumping around and i can hear that relay clicking behind the center console (not my ecu) after the relay goes off the car wants to die....can anyone help or have any ideas as to what it might be?

make sure the transistor pack is grounded fine. also check to make sure the little capacitor looking thing attached to the drivers side of the intake manifold didnt get screwed up\ damaged. My 2g did the same thing one time and it was because the transistor pack was not grounded properly and that little capacitor thing got screwed up.

.....also today i was messing with it and while it was running i disconnected the positive terminal and the car turned off......so i took the alternator and took to autozone to get checked and the guy said it was fine.....so im stumped as to what that would mean....

i dont know what "capacitor" thing your talking about....do you have a picture....also how do you check to see if the transistor pack it grounded correctly i thought it was just a 7pin plug?

ok ....little update....i think i may have found the culprit...i tracked down the clicking to a relay that is located on the passenger side underneath the left side kick panel that removes from the center console....it is bolted onto the frame rail that connects the center console right behind it....it is the top relay of the two there.....when i disconnnect it with the car running the idle returns to normal but the car dies when i press the gas more than a 1/4 throttle....what is this relay as i think the bottom one is the fuel pump relay as the car dies when i disconnect it....the part number on the relay is E8T101 with 5511 underneath that number....

ok update...i had to wait for mistu to get teh relays i needed so they came in today and i popped it in and the car does the same thing???? So then i checked the 100 and 60 amp fuses and they arent blown....next i swapped out the transistor and it did the same thing...i changed battery terminals and batteries.....i even looked at the wire harness as best i could and saw no shorts or open wires????? I dont know what to do next....any suggestions???

Oh btw the car still seems to idle better if i start it then unplug the mfi relay but i cant give the car and throttle or it dies.....

Ok i uploaded some videos

http://www.zippyvideos.com/227235042...19-02-06_1452/

This one is of me idleing the car at 1k and then revving....as you can see it only revs until 2 (sounds like stutterbox) then the relay clicks a few times and the car dies

http://www.zippyvideos.com/247450265...19-02-06_1453/

I do the same thing in this video but i then move the camera to the relay so you can hear it click

http://www.zippyvideos.com/539732106...19-02-06_1456/

On this video i do basically the same then i walk outside the car so you can hear the car idle and see the black smoke comming out

Sorry about the quality this was taken on my camera phone

i know it sounds like a blown headgasket but im almost positive i dont have a blown headgasket as the problem occured going 35mph under 10% load...no boost......and also because when i disconnect the MFI relay the idle returns to normal

i checked that plug man....i even changed it out with a spare one i have....no dice...but thanks for the suggestion
