so when i pulled my motor/trans, the output shaft came out of the transmission with the xfer case.

Can I put it back together with this new motor or does the tranny have to be disassembled and the shaft be put back in correctly.

There is a detent and ball that hold this into place. If the trans was rebuilt and this was left out it should be ok. However if its a stock trans then you may have some loose floating parts abroad. Im not too keen on the trans yet, but I believe you may be able to take off the back cover and look.

It shouldn't do that. Take the end cover off, then remove the gears and take the next part of the trans case off. Under that you should have your viscous coupling. The VC is held onto the output shaft by a little ball and a c-clip. The hole in the end of the output shaft is for the little ball to go into.

just go get a 1/4 inch steel ball bearing from a hardware store, take the end case off, set the ball in the little indent and slide the output shaft in, once the end of the output shaft reaches the ball hammer your output shaft the rest of the way in with a rubber hammer or something that wont damage it. there is just enough play to get it by

well the local transmission shop (that is any good) will not work on a carried in transmission.

they want me to put this trans on the new engine and drive/pull it up there first

will just sliding the shaft back in atleast get me to the transmission shop? i am not cracking this trans open myself. I built a couple engines but never a transmission.

if i cant drive it to the shop ill just buy another trans before i put it back together

If you've built engines you should have no problem getting this taken care of. Just read through the VFAQ articles, post up pictures if you get stuck and take your time. If the trans is already out, this can be fixed in less than an hour (for me anyway). I'll subscribe to this thread and give my 2 cents if you decide to tackle this yourself. I've put together and taken apart DSM transmissions before. The shop wants a complete car so they can charge you the hours it takes to pull the trans out and put it back in.

yeah the thing that worries me is that its an automatic. and before the car blew up it was having shifting problems that could have been mechanical or electrical. Ive swapped internals on DSM manual trans before (FWD) and it worked out alright but ive never touched an automatic

literally all you have to do is take the end case off, you dont remove any gears or anything. I honestly just did it in my manual trans a day ago, im sure the output shaft setup is the same on both types (manual and auto). just take the end case off, put the ball in and hammer the output shaft in til it slides past the ball. but if you really want to just drive it to the shop, then yes you can drive it with the output shaft just sitting in there. slide it in, then put the tcase on and youre good to go. the only bad thing about driving with that little ball gone is the trans will leak a little out of the seal the output shaft sits in, but not bad enough to do anything.

The car was having shifting problems (working sometimes, and not shifting other times) and even manually shifting up sometimes wouldnt shift it. if i can fix it with just a new shift solenoid then ill put that shaft back in.

but if its clearly that easy then ill put the shaft back in myself

yea putting the shaft back in is cake, I'm not familiar with auto transmissions so i wouldnt know why it was giving you a hard time shifting, but im sure the solenoid has something to do with it.

I was racing a guy last night and i was in third gear and i heard a loud pop. Then my rpm gauge started to spin round and round and the car started bucking really bad. It died a few time and didn't want to start bck up like it wasn't getting any fuel. When it does want to stay running it sounds fine motor and trans its when i try to drive it. And its pretty bad so any answers would b great

you might want to start your own thread with the problem and you'd get more help with it, but I'd vote for an ecu issue. the only reason your rpm gauge would go around and around would be because of the ecu, as for the loud pop, something probably let go in the trans. was the pop more of a breaking sound or like a backfire.

Ok well when i popped the back off the trans i just sat it to the side without looking at it. well when i went to put it back on i saw that a round bearing type thing with a piston ring type thing was sitting with it, I didnt see how it came off so i stuck the ring in and then the bearing and it didnt want to go into that back housing, i coaxed it in about halfway then bolted the cover back onto the transmission

anyways yeah i probably just messed something up
