Just got this 1g auto AWD a couple of weeks ago (my first auto :D) and I'm in the process of removing my tcase to get to the oil pan. After getting the tcase bolts off, tcase slides over but won come out because the trans output shaft is stuck in there. I've owned a couple DSMs and a Evo before, but I've never had this happen to me. Can anyone tell me what just happened and what I need to do to fix it. Any help greatly appreciated.

The only thing I know about the output shaft coming out of the transmission is if someone had the transmission end cover off, and lost one of the ball bearings that holds the output shaft in place.

When you run a welded VC for dynoing I've seen the ball bearings come out and the shaft will just slide out. If that's all that it is it's not a big deal and can be fixed pretty easily.

You can get the output shaft out by puting a 5/16 rod into the hole & tap it with a hammer.
Take off the end cap & you'll see the hole at the end of the centre diff. Not the 4th cover.
Cheers !

Nevermind did a little searching and I answered my own question. I'm going to give this a try and see if it works. Thanks for all the help so far guys!!!!

Ok guys I got it out. I ended up using this thread for some help:

http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/articles-drivetrain/425557-automatic-trans-center-diff-removal.html

One thing to note though, make sure you have the car in neutral. The outer gear and bearing are not coming out with it in park. I wrapped a shop rag around the output shaft and clamped it with vice grips to hold it in place. Then I pulled on the tcase and it came right on out.

Now the question that I have is where the balls go that were supposed to hold the shaft in place? I didn't see anything when I removed the center diff unless there's something I'm missing.
