Hello all,

I'm looking for a list of available OEM thermostats for 2G cars. Part numbers and temperature ratings if possible. I'm looking for something a bit cooler than my original one.

I did a search and didn't come up with much. One post had a part number that was supposed to be for a 170* for a 2G, and I ordered it in only to find out that it was definitely not for a 2G. So, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't see why you wouldn't. V8s have been doing this for years. Its just allowing the thermostat to open at a lower temperature to allow the motor to run at a cooler temp.

Check out the learn mode requirements.

Cracking temp is 180° and it's fully open at 203°.

So if I'm idling at 206-213 with one fan running and 195-203 with both fans running I should be ok then. Still considering going to a slightly colder thermostat, but I'm wondering if going to an aluminium radiator will have the same effect.

Its still working on getting really hot in NC, we haven't broken 100 degrees yet. Its those days that concern me. Right now my only cooling system modifications are a Mishimoto shroud and 12 inch fans, with manual fan control. Planning on replacing hoses and thermostat in the next few weeks (don't know their age), and thinking about doing an aluminium radiator while I have the system open.

Is there an option for one that is fully open at say... 190°?

Thanks for the info, BTW.

Maybe look into a Stant 14077 (170°). I checked their site, but it doesn't show the different temps.

Yep, you should be ok. You could do some stuff to get it down, such as run a 70/30 mix of water/coolant along with a bottle of Water Wetter. You could go with a cooler thermostat. An aluminum radiator would help cool the coolant, but it won't lower your temps. The thermostat regulates the temps.

Also keep in mind that if you see temps in excess of 210° during a pull, you will start to pull timing.

FWIW, I run a Koyo radiator, a dual FAL setup, 170° thermostat (I think...or maybe it's a 160°), 70/30 mix with a bottle of Water Wetter, and an electric fan controller. My temps are consistently around 179° and rarely go above 186° or so. I use link's coolant offset to make sure it sees above 180° once fully warmed up. I truly believe the electric fan controller helps tremendously!

Edit: Eric says I'm running a 180° thermostat.

My car runs HOT. I think I'm going to need to get a better radiator for this summer. I have a 170* thermostat but my temps still cross 220* quite frequently, even when it was in the single digits outside. Maybe my temp sensor is going bad??? My car will sit at 206* while cruising on the highway.

I saw 258*F the other day :sosad: on a 2 mile 8% grade hill climb in 85* weather. :notgood:

Way too hot for sure. I just used the pepboys lowest Tstat and I also ran around 185ish

99 when i go to work tomrrow ill see what i can come up with for you. I wish i could get a stat for a 1g that opened at 143. im running a 160 right now. if my memory servers me correctly the stock ecu pulls timing unless the coolant hits a certain temp. im running an aem ems so i can do whatever i like. according to my auto meter the cars staying at 160-180 with the spal and the ebay fun running and i have an exhaust like right at the dp. but it just seems that the upper cooling hose gets really hard like its hotter then it says. wheres the best place to tap a gauge in? mines in the t-stat housing

That Stant 14077 cap is the sh1t! My car is running exactly 20* cooler with it. I let it sit idle for 20 minutes today and the temps never went over 193*, and mostly sat at 190* once fully warm. This is exactly what I was hoping to achieve. Thanks for the recommendation, Brian.

FYI: It does not include a new rubber gasket/seal.

i took my thermostat off..!!!!! always do.... works fine
So, what temp do you idle at? And how long does it take for your car to reach that temp when cold?

Those are my primary concerns when considering removing the thermostat all together. I wouldn't want something that took 20 minutes to reach 150*...

takes around 15min it takes a bit but it doesnt bother me...!!! ive always done that to all of my cars yet they never overheat, unless i have a bad radiator or pump...!!! that the way i roll...!!! LOL :hellyeah:

Yeah, but running no stat isn't about preventing overheating. where's Defiant's charm right now?

What you are doing is just a band aid, if you had to do this to get home fine, but it's definitely not a long term solution. Fix your car the right way and be done with it.

A thermostat gets a car up to normal operating temp, it doesn't make your car run hot. If you are running hot you have a problem -- bad head gasket, water pump, radiator, sucking air somewhere, the thermostat you were running was bad, etc. If you are at a lot cooler temp to begin with (no thermostat), obviously it will take longer to run hot, but it will happen. It is also hard on the engine to run it hard when it is too cool, especially if you have forged pistons. Your fuel maps will be off, your mileage will suffer as will your hp. It will be harder on your engine.

I had my thermostat out for a few days while my head gasket was leaking, and the car would always be like 130-150 degrees on the highway and only warm up when in town / stop-and-go traffic; the instant I was on the highway again the temp was gone.
Okay, here we go again:
The thermostat does not cool the engine. The thermostat keeps it warm. The radiator cools the coolant.
Get your thermostat from the dealer, and run the factory spec.

"Fail-Safe" thermostats are a marketing gimmick, and are no more reliable than normal thermostats. Although they're supposed to fail "open", what do they do when that feature "fails"?

Do not run any post-1980 car without a thermostat.
No. staring it up and running for a few minutes is ok, but
NEVER RUN AN ENGINE FOR A LONG TIME, OR DRIVE A CAR 1965 AND NEWER WITHOUT A THERMOSTAT. Period. Don't make me get Defiant on your ass about this one.

Yeah, that wouldn't work for me. I typically let my car warm up every time before I drive it, and I definitely wouldn't want to wait 15 minutes every time. With this Stant thermostat, it heats up quickly (about 5 minutes), and keeps the temp right where I want it once fully warm.

yea well i live in sandiego... soooo in the summer it gets warm quick...!!!! ive never had a problem before with not using a thermostat....!!!! i guess everyone see's things in different ways..!!!
