As the title says i have a 96 2G w/o sunroof, is there any possible way i can make this conversion happen? It looks like all i need to do is take measurements, make the hole and go from there, and of course weatherproof it but you never know.

Has anyone heard of this or done this? any write ups or anything? is it possible? do i need a separate harness or anything?

its not worth it, no matter if you do it or have it professionally installed it is bound to eventually leak and you also have to realize the car is designed to not have one. god forbid if anything happened to you while driving the car it would most likely crumble because you no longer have a reenforced roof. better off buying a 2g with a sunroof if you want one that bad ;)

yeah you're all probably right, but every time i see a 2g with a sunroof i get jealous, plus you can use lighter material than glass, ie carbon fiber, and lightweight aluminum railing, and to water proof i can put silicon or something in the grommet around the thin metal to make seal

Personally I think its up to the cars owner to determine the value of a sunroof. When it comes to selecting performance parts that vary in performance depending on other mods done to your car, only then is the opinion of someone else (you guys) desirable.

Seriously if you look hard enough, you can find an issue with anything and everything.

Why have a radio? it could short out, maybe its too much weight
Why have a spoiler? Too much weight
Why have paint on your car? It could chip, fade, scratch, or flake off.
Why have a front bumper cover? It could break, crack or scrape the ground. Too much restriction to the IC(1g mainly).
Why have sideview mirrors? Too much weight. Too much wind resistance.
Why have a ..... Seriously guys.

As stated above. Get it done professionally, if it leaks, you'll be pissed.

With as much work as it's going to be, why not be different and do a targa top? It's been done before; But you'd need to reinforce the roof.

IMO, you're better off without a sunroof. They always end up leaking anyway.

Awesome. You guys say he shouldn't get a sunroof because they leak and make the car heavy but then some of you suggest he cut his car up in a way that was never intended or designed, add a bunch of bracing and hope and pray a hack job like that doesn't leak either. At least a sunroof can be closed up by hand or the push of a button while driving. Good luck carrying around a whole roof in case you suddenly need to button it up to park or due to a downpour.

Probably the most proper way to do a sun roof would be to find a dsm with factory sun roof then take the whole roof skin. This way you can swap roof skins out and use all oem parts for your sunroof if it ever breaks/or leaks. Now switching the roof skin takes a lot of work and welding but would probably be the best/most correct way to do it.

it would most likely crumble because you no longer have a reenforced roof

I have to politely disagree with this statement due to the fact that installing a sunroof does not involve modifying reinforcement bars, only cutting the sheet metal in the middle. The reinforcements run along the sides and are only about 4 inches wide (measured from the edge of the door opening). It will be easy to see once headliner is removed.

A targa top is different since everything is removed. Some say it's better to start with a spyder and add the top. I agree with that since spyders are already reinforced to make up for lack of roof support.

I have a sunroof and love it. If you are anal about weight, then forget it. If you decide to hack up your car, make sure you read up on installing one properly, then read it again. It would suck to have a sopping wet interior every time it rains.

Good luck & Take pictures!
