Well, i'm not 100% sure its a capacitor, but... There is a silver round piece that looks like gets grounded on the intake manifold of a 2g. I did a 6bolt swap and must not have tighten it down properly, and because it was lose, it was causing my IGN fuse to constantly blow. I removed it and the car runs fine now. What is it for and can I run without it?

It is called a condensor it is there to absorb the large amount of voltage that a large inductor will create when the current throught is changed rapidly. I would make sure it is on there for your ecu's sake. basically V=L (di/dt) so say your coil has an inductance L of .5 henri's and it has a resistance of 3 ohms, it will be flowing 4amps through it when it is flowing. sudenly this current is shut off. (very large di/dt) say it takes .001 seconds for the current to goto 0. then di/dt is 4/.001 which is 4000 amps per second so if we put this into our earlier equation we ha V=.5*4000. so V=2000 volts presented to the output transistor on your ecu. coincedently those only are rated for around 100v obviously it won't last long like...
There are two leads on the capacitor. One goes to the +12V power source from the ASD relay (the center wire connecting to the coil pack), and the other is grounded.

You should be able to replace it with most any electrolytic capacitor rated to 150 degrees Celsius and 25V or higher. It should also have the same capacitance as the stocker but even if not, it will work better than no capacitor at all. Unfortunately RadioShack does not carry electrolytics rated to 150 degrees...

You could also try your local junkyard or eBay.

Do they have to be mounted to the engine block? I would rather have it mounted under my dash, where my ECU is.

I take it you do not have a 2G N/T since the ECU's in 420A based DSM's is in the engine bay... Since this capacitor is decoupling a signal, it's best to have as close to the source of noise as possible. I suppose you could move it anywhere, but I don't think it'll be doing much good anyplace else.

It's the small cylinder attached to the valve cover near the camshaft position sensor.

Negative on mine.

Mine was located right behind the headers on the right side of the motor, mounted to the block.

It's possible yours was moved by another owner or anyone else who has worked on the car.

I thought this too.

However all four of my 420a dsm's over the past two years have had them there.

Very strange.

I'm thinking the location may be year related. All four that I have owned have been located on the block. I know for a fact that two of them were from original owners.

Hey all, newbie here!

I removed my alternator today to replace it, and found this on the back of it.

What is it, and what is it for?

Thanks,
Mean

1g's have a built in voltage regulator.

It was hanging there when I got under the car. The wire is only 3" long max!

It looks like a condenser. I have no idea why it was on your alternator; I have never seen one there. Was it hooked up to anything or just hanging there?

On the end of my 2g manifold(drivers side) there is a small cylinder thing mounted on the manifold with a single wire running to it. It is also on 1g's because on the old 1g fwd it had one.

What does it do? I think it is causing my problems I am having.

pics? im assuming intake manifold is it with your coil pack. I dont know if 2g's have a noise filter like that, but 90's do.
