So i've been through the whole nine yards with my car trying to figure out what is wrong. Came down to either a huge boost leak or bad ecu. I pulled the ecu about 7 months ago, and much to my dismay, found no eprom. The caps were in good condition at that time. As i was about 1 month away from moving 1200 miles i didnt have the time to replace the caps as i am less than proficient in circuitry and didnt want to risk destroying my ecu before i moved. I had planned on getting a shop here to replace them in march when i was going to have time off work. It seems i didnt get that long to wait. It looks like one of my caps leaked on my board and destroyed the harmony my car was enjoying. So my questions here are; is this in fact my cap leaking or is something else the culprit, and, is this fixable or am i now in the market for a new ecu? Thanks in advance...

from my exprerience i had the same problem and i had the caps replaced, and it didnt help anything. Usally once the eletrolyte hit the board its shot i got an ecu from motorguys garage.com. You can send them yours and the new one has a 12 month warranty it worked first try. hopefully i dont get in trouble for the "plug".

leaky caps usually = trashed ecu in my experience. sorry. that's why you're supposed to replace them before they leak. of course, it CAN be repaired. however, the question is: will the cost of repair be less than the cost of buying a used ecu with new caps? probably not.

check the classifieds, your local junkyards, and ebay for a new one. maybe it's time to upgrade.

Mitch, I may be experiencing the same problem now. I am looking at FFWD's products.

They offer rebuilding services for the 1Gs, which you have. If you decide to replace your ECU, they all offer those too:

So if you have some time to wait, you can send it over to FFWD and see what they can do. If there isn't a problem with the ECU, then your problem lies elsewhere. Does your ECU smell like anything it shouldn't?

That does look like it leaked but it does'nt look like it did that much damage if any. I have seen and (drive with) ecu's that looked alot worse and still operate.
