2g m/t speed sensor diagnosis

So I pulled my speed sensor because my speedometer isn't working at all the plug was connected correctly with no corrosion and the speed sensor looks brand new...the only thing I noticed was some shavings on the gear.

In the picture does the gear look stripped or is this healthy looking? Could the sensor have been inserted wrong by the previous owner? Or is it more likely that the sensor has locked up causing the grinding?

I'm just trying to decide if I should replace the sensor or just the gear since I have no idea of how to test the sensor itself.

first thing i would do is get a budy or someone to sit in the car and watch the speedomiter. th easyeist way to see if the sensor is reding or not is to have someone watch the gauge while the other person spins the sensor. Now ignition must be turned on to do this of course. now i did look at the pics also the gear is worn down and a way to tell is if you look at the gear it self you can see it is kinda rounded to to centr the gears is sapossed to be flat on the sides where the splines are. getting back to the testing of the vehical speed sensor i would also recamend checking the wiring and cause i have had it where the sensor lost a ground. but if the sensor dont work check wiring agin to verify its all good before you get a sensor.
