this is a stupid question i heard u have to have a 2g install kit to install a mitsubishi big 16g turbo on my 96 eagle talon tsi can some one tell me wether i do or not

what if i install myself cause i done it on my 1g and it took about 3 hours how would it be a hassle on my 2g cause whats differnt

It's not really a matter of installing yourself. it's about having what you need for a clean install. The kits just come with all the gaskets, lines , and bolts to make things that much simpler. Personally i would get it. There are ways around it but as we all know cutting corners only sends you in a circle.

An install kit is not needed. It makes it a little bit easier though.

Things that generally come with install kits are:

A j pipe because the compressor outlet on mitu turbos is not in the same location as it is on garrett turbos. You could use a 1st gen one and flip your stock intercooler piping around and that should prevent you from also needed:

A lower intercooler L pipe to connect the j pipe to the stock intercooler

A 7 cm gasket for exhaust manifold to turbo. I consider this a must have, and can be bought seperately.

A new stainless steel oil feed line. This is needed and can be purchased seperately.

Some kits come with a new oil return line. This is not needed, you can take a metal file and enlarge the bolts on the flange for the side of the line that bolts to the turbo and make it fit.

New copper crush washers. Mostly not needed (you can reuse your old ones) but nice to have.

New oil return line gaskets. Nice to have. Can be got just about anywhere or made with gasket material if you want.

You will also need to do a little bending of your water lines to get them to work with the new turbo. Not hard at all.

I think I covered it all. I am starting to wonder why I went through all of that, when a simple SEARCH would have told you why some of that stuff is needed or at least good to have.

KPWSerpiente said it but in simpler terms you need everything except a new oil drain line and water lines. They're nice to have but really not needed at all. Get the hacker/tweaker kit from RRE. It's $200 and has everything you'll need.

it's really a questions of whether you want to get all the stuff your self from multiple sources or buy one already pre-assembled.

Hassle vs cost

I disagree, personally. I had fun piecing together my "install kit". And saved some coin as well. Not a lot, but I got exactly what I wanted, which made me happy since I consider install kits to be way overpriced.

I completely understand. In my case, I had plenty of time, was determined not to overpay, and looked forward to the challenge of assembling my own parts list. For quick and easy, though, a pre-packaged kit is definitely the way to go.

whats he best place to get one...and ill be putting on a dnp manifold at the same time and a ported o2 housing....am i gonna need to get new bolts for the nami or anything?.....and anyone have an average install time on a b16g wiht a kit

Probably 4 hours and up. The "up" depending on what breaks and what extra stuff you need. Plan ahead (like you're doing) and you should be fine. I think the RRE kit is the best kit to get. It's only 195. If you want THE BEST kit, get their full install kit. It has everything but it costs 325.

can you give me a link to the wo install kits please.....adn is it worth i to go with the full kit....i dont mind spending the extra cash to do it in 4 or less hours.....lil be having help

Sure, here's both the half kit(hacker-tweaker kit) and the full install kit.

Honestly, yes the full kit would be helpful if you don't mind spending the money. No bending water pipes or filing bolt holes. All new gaskets and all new crush washers. It's pretty much everything you need parts wise.

Check out those two links to VFAQ earlier in the thread and they'll tell you any little extra parts you may need and any extra tricks that help.

im doin my install this weekend and i would say hellz no to buyin a 200 $ install kit. I got all new gaskets from mitsu for 9 bucks, a 1 g j pipe from the junkyard for 15 bucks, my 14b turbo for 100 bucks and a 1g oil feed line for 20 bucks ive spent about 10 bucks in misc crap like some hoses to connect the 1g feed to my 2g feed but all in all im about all set with less than 50 bucks out of pocket

but here sthe differentce......i dont have access ot a junkyard and i hate not havgni things when i need them so i dont mind doing it profesional and right the first tim einstead of having to rig it so i can drive to the store to get wat i need.....this way it comes t my door wiht the turbo ibuy from htem...makes it hat much easier

no use in going in circles over this arguement. i didn't get the RRE hacker kit, but the SBR install kit. 200 bucks and you get the same shit and here's a great tip: when you bend you water lines, go SLOW and make sure you dont warp them as i did. you wont do this unless you bend really quick, go too far, and want to bend back [ like i did  ]

have fun,
and once you finished.. make sure you primer the turbo and go for a spin~!
