Wel I just bought a fancy sony vaio. Now I just rememberd I can log with this. But the question is, how? I downloaded a Palm OS emulator, what's next? What's the software i use, or what cable do I buy to connect my laptop to my ob2? I have a 95 ecu btw.

Right, I heard and read into the dsmlink. I'm looking for the freeware I can download just to beging basic logging. That way I can be prepared for dsmlink in the future.

I hear ya, but I don't have 500 bucks to spend right now. So I'm looking for some freeware just to monitor my car. Not tune.

I forgot where to get the rom file for the emulator but you also need a serial port on your laptop so that you can hook the cable up to your laptop to the diagnostic port on your car. If you don't have a serial port on your laptop, you could buy a USB-Serial convertor but i've heard that some of them are not very compatible. Use the search to search for more info on the emulator and the files. I found all the necessary information just by searching on this site and I started from scratch too. So I guarantee you the information is on here somewhere.

I hear ya, that's how I came across the emulator. It's installed already, just need to know how to use it. I need a serial cable huh? Is that what I ask for when I go to best buy? Or is it a specific name?

There are a a few differnt free softwares, but they are extremely not user friendly for the most part i would suggest somethign like obd-2.com for 122 dollars you can get a great deal on everything you need and people have had great succes with them. I can't think of any of the free places, but if you search you can easily find them like you should have before making this post.

There's a guy on ebay that sells the cables for really cheap. I can't find it right now, but once i get home tonight i'll give you the link to it. If you search hard enough, there is even an faq on this site that shows you how to use the emulator and what to doexactly. If you still can't find the free software, i'll can send it to you through email later tonight. And no Bob, the software i found was extremely easy to use. A monkey could figure it out.

Thanks, looking foward to it.

I've had the emulator and a couple different loggers on my laptop, but i haven't been able to sync up for whatever reason.
I have to use a usb-serial controller. since i don't have serial,

where is this tutorial on running the emulator on the lappy? I've searched but with no results on which usb serial controllers are compadible.
Anyone have the link?

If you're still looking for the serial adapter, here's some info.

Most new laptops don't have serial ports anymore, just USB. So you need a device that has serial on one side and USB on the other. Best buy, compusa, they all have it, you could ask for a "USB Serial adapter", but your best bet is to look for it yourself. Unless you find an unusually competent saleperson, I'd avoid telling them what it's for and just say you need a cable with serial on one side and USB on the other. If you mention it's for palm-emulation to log a dsm, they'll probably either just glass-over, or sell you the wrong product, or tell you you can't do it. YMMV.

In a store it's probably ~$40 or so. You can find it online for cheaper, $10-20, but be prepared since USB-serial adapters are tricky for our cars and you may have incompatibilities.

I've seen those, thanks. What kind of incompatibilities should I be aware of?
