Have a quick question. If i get a HID kit will i be okay since i have aftermarket projector head lights?

alrgith koo thanx, but that means im still goign to have to take apart my head lights right?

Define kit..I am very worried when people use that word...
And as far as taking your headlights apart - yes.

Having just spent a large amount of time searching for my HID components, I agree completely with TrystanGST. However, I finally settled on HIDPlanet and they were great. High quality Phillips and Hella components and fast service. The cheaper option is eBay, which Six97GST reccomends (check out his writeup if you're looking for inspiration, he is an artist with headlights). But definately be careful, check out any company's service before you order, and see if you can google and find complaints.

The term HID "kit" is often confused.

If you buy an HID (bulb) kit you are simply replacing an existing bulb in your headlights with an HID capsule (bulb) that has been adapted to fit into H1 or H3 or 9006 etc. style bulb holders. This kit includes the required ballast and ignitor boxes and wires but does not include a complete OEM style projector/reflector lens etc. You will not get OEM style success with this method and you may well end up causing significant glare and blinding to oncoming traffic. Use with great caution. It is generally frowned upon since your halogen light system were never intended for HID capsules. Legality wise, these are for off-road use only. You are still using your existing lights, housings, reflectors, projectors lenses etc.

If you buy an HID (projector) kit, like from HIDplanet, you are buying a complete HID system just like found in OEM HID cars including the all important OEM HID projector and lens assembly. This assembly must be mounted in place of your existing reflector inside the housing. This is much more difficult to do but the end result is an HID headlamp that should be as good as the OEM HID equipped car it was designed for. Technically, this can still be considered illegal but when done properly it is as good as a factory system. If installed wrong or aimed wrong it can still be a hazard to fellow drivers.

Good point. The bulb kit is what I think of when people say "kit", and that's why I cringe. But if they mean the projector retrofit, then that's alright by me (especially seeing as I have done it to my own DSM). I think a lot of people get turned off by the cost of doing it the right way (retrofit).

Completely agree with you. I don't know how many PMs I get with people asking if their H3 eBay projectors work with their new ebay special '12k 9006 HID kit'. Or why after 'retrofitting' an HID bulb into their halogen projectors, the light output is still horrible.

Please, please, please do the right way and retrofit OEM units into your headlights. You will be WAY happier with the outcome, and everyone else on the road will be as well.

My buddy jammed a set of 6000k HID bulbs in his Neon projectors.. the light output was as good as a flash light with 4 year old batteries... but the light is blue... so he's happy.

This is the kind of thing I hope the smart readers here at Tuners will avoid. That situation is just bad all around. Less light output for him, more glare for other drivers, and most likely an illegal kit to boot.
