Alright, i was reading a older issue of HCI the other day, and there was an article about a 2g

buildup, and though the dude got a galant shortblock(with low miles), he replaced his 6 bolt

head with the original one he had on his 7 bolt:confused: , now he also had a mangus intake

manifold that wouldn't fit on the older head, but other than that, or some crazy porting that he

had done, there didn't seem to be any reason for this.

I had heard that the earlier 6 bolts had larger valves, which i would assume would mean a

better flowing head, but is there something else that i am missing here?

The 2g head has more velocity through the it/ better design. The valves themselves are the same, but the ports/runners through the head are bigger on the 1g. So, it's better on the topend, but gives up some in the lower RPMs. Maybe the guy wanted to try and keep some of the responsiveness...

I remember reading on here somewhere that you can port out the 2g head to flow as well as a 1g. Maybe he had already done some headwork and didnt want to waste it. Just throwing ideas out.

The 2g stock has better entry to the head due to the angle of the head entry. The 1g is larger so it has more volume, however, a 2g head professionaly ported and polished will get better velocity and volume than a 1g.

Stock for stock it is known that a 1g head flows more because of its much larger intake ports. (You also have to remember that when most swap a 1g head they also take along the 1g intake mani & 1g TB which are a big improvement from the 2g setup & these parts defently help with the gain). Alot have said that the way a 2g head flow is better in that the path into the valve is much better then the 1g design & that a properly ported 2g head will flow better then a ported 1g head. 2g head buildups seem to be getting more popular for high hp applications. Another benefit in keeping a 2g head if your car is a 2g & your doing a 6 bolt swap is you don't have to worry about changing wiring. IM are are designed for 1g or 2g because of the port size differences, so if he already had a Magnus SMIM for a 2g head, maybe he didn't want the cost of swapping it as well.

Ok that makes a lot of sense, now following this logic could you use a EVO head, or do the

coolant passages not line up, etc. because otherwise i would think that they would have

further refined the head in more recent years, or am i completly off base with this

although, after i thought about this, picking the type of head,IM, etc, that matches your style

and build, makes a lot more sense than just throwing stuff on indiscriminatly that wont work

well together at all,

because from what i gather, having a distinct goal for your builds is much better than just

throwing on a bunch of "power adders" that may really not do that much for you

at least once you get to higher power and torque levels, instead of upgrading specific

things as well as having the proper tuning
