i have a 96 gst its bone stock. im posting this to see what people would do for a first mod. im tossing up between a FMIC setup and 3" turbo back exhaust. car only has 85k miles so im not wanting to do alot of modding until i hit 100k. i plan to swap turbos and injectors and dsmlink and so on....but if you had this car what would your first support mod be. FMIC or exhaust?

Make sure you've done the maintenance before you do any performance mods. The last thing you want is to spend $300 on an exhaust and then smash some valves because you didn't change the timing belt and tensioner.

But onto mods, do all the free mods that you can. If you Google "dsm free mods" a bunch of stuff will pop up. And get a wideband and a logger to monitor things. Maybe get an aftermarket boost, oil, and water temp gauges, as the stock gauges aren't very accurate.

cool thanks guys for the advice. the upgrade path looks awesome. and is already helping with decissions. i appriciate the help.....another question. when buying an intake..should i consider getting the recirc or non recirc...i guess whats the ups and downs between the two.

Some of the maintenance items you might as well upgrade as you need them. An example would be like plug wires. Maybe consider instead of just getting whatever your local part store has go ahead and get something like ngk's, accel's, or magnecore. Or instead of getting a replacement drop in air filter go with a k&N cone filter.

A big concern should be your timing belt and water pump just because you can get to it then.
Then plug wires, plugs, all filters, belts and hoses...yeah you get it. All the not so fun and cool looking stuff. Not completely true. They make performance everything for our cars. Just try to make decisions so you don't have to buy stuff twice. That will get your car running nice and leave more for go fast goodies.

I have a timing belt kit to install. Just havent gotten around to it.

does that kit come with a water pump?

And recirc or no...? I'm recirculated and I can still hear the bov under higher boost. I prefer the sound of spooling anyway. Its up to you really. Can you live with the PSshshhhhhh every day? or is this your weekend warrior?

It's my daily driver. The timing kit didn't come with a water pump but I have a brand new one to put in whenever I Fo the timing belt. So basically if.your recirc it quiet down the.bov? Id rather hear spool over bov personally.

Think of recirculation as having nothing to do with the sound of the valve and everything to do with the performance of your car. Vent it and your performance will suffer drastically.

#1 bolt-on mod should be exhaust, for sure. There's nothing a good FMIC is going to do for you with the stock exhaust.

He said it all before I could, LOL

Agree!

First make a special maintenance! Change little parts to performance parts, exemple:

- cable sparks
- NGK sparks
- K&N oil Filters
- K&N air filter
- Take a Performance BOV
- Review the fuel pump (think a possible rewire)

and others....

First you have a decide how many hp´s you want,to not spend again your money later!!

Good luck!

It all comes down to what YOU want to do. I knew I should have done exhaust first, but I came across a REALLY good deal on my GReddy FMIC, so I installed that. Yes, even on my stock T-25. Then I upgraded to a 14b. Then I did my GReddy exhaust a couple months later. Not the greatest order to do things, but it worked for me.

I normally get the FMIC when I get the turbo setup I want. Because some turbos piping is different. No reason to have to redo work.
