Hello!

I've recently acquired and started taking care of my ever first DSM, a 97 GST. One of the first bigger jobs I wanted to do was restore some of the interior back to original/good condition, which meant swapping out the dashboard.

So I swapped the GST interior for the GSX and put the dash back together somewhat succesfully, but there's one connector under the steering wheel that doesn't match the one from the GST dash, and I need some help identifying what that is for and what could possibly be done to make this compatible. I couldn't find any post about this when I tried searching. The connector on the right of the one I'm holding (smaller black with yellow and green wires) is also unknown where it should go to. Feels like I looked and went over everything. There's also a lot of custom wiring (some nightmarish) done to it so maybe that one isn't original.

Basically the GST connector is the asymmetrical one, and (GSX?) has the symmetrical. Anyone done a similar fix to this? There's some weird things going on with the dash so I wouldn't be surprised if the lack of this connection is why. Either I connected something incorrectly or somehow missed despite checking so many times. Gauge cluster has both turn indicators light up at the same time, and the signal for headlight reminder is activating when it shouldn't.

Appreciate all the help and thanks for any answers!

I realised a while back after searching more, I couldn't find specifically about non-matching connectors, but rather that the entire wiring harness that comes with the dashboards are not the same between 2g's depending on the model (I'm guessing turbo/non-turbo, 2ga/2gb? Although supposedly this one comes from a GSX..). So the solution to this is to then swap the wiring harness, something I didn't know or think about before. I also didn't think much of it you can remove it entirely, so that'll fix the problems guaranteed!

I am by no means a master at this as I am also starting my first rebuild project on my own 97 gst. I just got finished the majority of the wiring in mine and I believe the black plug that you are referring to goes directly into the fuse box (generally what I have found is black plugs go to the fuse box excluding only a couple). Those plugs look like the ones that either connect to the harness that runs across the top of the metal dash brace (I think from factory it is actually connected to the removable dash itself) OR they would connect to the harness that comes in from the driver side inner fender well. Mine are kind of tucked away behind the fuse box to the left of the clutch pedal. If you need any more help let me know and I can try to get over to the garage to take pictures.

I am actually running into issues myself and am about to post about it because it seems that I have a plug that is a little further down from the under the seat heated oxygen sensor plug that I think is meant to connect to the rear harness, but the plug doesn't match up. The wire colors are green w/ yellow stripe, blue w/ white, and black. any ideas?

This thread may be helpful for ya!

Sorry for the late reply! I got a bit inactive and was away for some time. Yeah there were some pretty big differences between the harnesses from the dashboards for the connectors, more than I thought even. After swapping back to the old harness, it of course all worked as intended. But even things like the speakers had different connectors, so they were not 1:1 interchangable either.

I have not yet seen this, I know where the O2 sensor plug is, I will check on mine later if it can be of any help. Or did you already manage to solve this? Are you missing any functions that you suspect has to do with this?

And thank you!

I found out that they added the fuel tank differential pressure sensor in 1998 so that was the plug that goes to that which is not needed. So I am hoping to get everything back together inside this weekend once I finish up rewiring the fuel pump, splicing in the wideband, and running the battery to the trunk! Then only a couple more things under the hood and off to the tuner!
