Ok my transmission blew and I need a new one. I was thinking of just picking up a "junkyard" special and sending it to TRE for a "budget" rebuild...any other suggestions? I don't want to spend too much.

Perhaps, but I doubt it, I could rebuilt my transmission that went bad. I haven't been able to rip it off yet to asses the damage (don't have a jack or power tools at this time) but to help try to put things into perspective, let me give an overview of what happened. I changed my transmission fluid, during so the fluid that came out was gold-colored and smelled pretty bad (like old burnt metal that's been sitting in oil)...at that moment, I knew I was screwed, since those little metal particles probably helped fill the gaps between the gears (I know it sounds odd, but changing an old trannys fluid is a big no no in my experience). I filled it up with GM Synchromesh and about a week later, my tranny started to sound like an angry elephant...it was LOUD. Then two weeks later it started sounding like I was in reverse all the time. The problem elevated, a week after that I couldn't shift from 1st to 2nd without it grinding (but I could downshift into 2nd with NO grinding). I'm hitting myself on the head right now because I should've changed out the fluid or done something other than let my tranny go (maybe some Lucas would've helped). Finally, leaving work cruising down the street at 40mph, my car starts to bogg like it's out of gas and then it just stops moving and the wheels lock up (literally) and it felt like there was something dragging on the ground. I get out and see transmisison fluid squirting out from where the tranny meets the engine.

I would just buy a good used one, or see if yours can be rebuilt. It sounds pretty bad though.

I dont see why you couldnt rebuild it. If you doing it yourself and havent before, id advise against it. Im not sayin it isnt doable. Taking it out and putting another in isnt hard. Make sure you take a bolt out of the a arms or take the tire rods off so you can move the wheels out and get the axles ouf of the transmission. Other than that use common sense, if you have any specific questions just ask.

I can easily remove the tranny, change a clutch, etc. but I've never rebuilt a tranny (I'll probably send it to TRE or something like that-but mine is SHOT). I'm worried about purchasing one on-line...I have doubts with the mileage people claim are on their trannies. I've checked those rebuild spots/companies and they're quoting me over $1500 w/6 month warranties and almost 100K on them...and then I'll receive an e-mail quoting me $550 + shipping with less than 40K from a private seller?!! I know private sales are always less, but they sound fishy! Obviously, anyone would jump at the latter, but what should I be looking for? Does anyone have any shots on what the internals of a "decent" tranny should look like? Someone, please, educate me! I know little about purchasing a used transmission as I've never been in the situation to need one.

You'd advise against it if he hasn't before? So, where exactly does one get their start if they never do it themselves?

When mine tranny popped on me, I bought a used one for $600. Get one cheap, swap it out, and then rebuild yours. Get a factory service manual, it's not terribly complicated -- just double and triple check everything.

Sounds like the best route to follow...I just got an offer for one with 30K for only $600...I'll pick it up and rebuild it which should prove to be a pretty solid tranny. Thanks.

If this is your only car, the route I would suggest is to open up the new tranny to make sure everything is intact, then install it. Rebuild your old one so that you don't have any downtime.

I assumed it was his only car. Therfore that is basically what i was getting to. I definately wasnt discouraging learning how to do it himself.:thumb:

I just bought a '91 240SX for a killer price so I'm gonna search around for a good tranny, send it to Shep (since I heard that TRE is a joke when it comes to turn time, etc.) and slap it back in.

Thanks again everyone.
