I'm tryin to get some info for a ECU swap I want to do, my friend has a 95 with a EPROM ECU, I have a 97, both turbo AWD cars.

My questions is can I just plug and play my ECI in his car (minus swapping the plug wires)? I'm thinking the something more involved here because of the fact he has no CAS and 97s do. I'm just wondering what can I do about this.

If anyone has done this I could use some pointers. thanks
 
The CAS signal is inverted. I've heard it will run but not well. You need a custom chip with the CAS single inverted to match your 97-99 signal. Besides that and the wires, it'll work fine. I just swapped mine last week.

The problem with it is you can get random misfire codes and the ecu will go into limp mode. There is a hack fix with the baro wire and a potentiometer <<spelling?>. DSMLink does not "fix" the problem but it allows you to swap for whichever CAS you have and it will disable the random misfire code :thumb:
 
Its hard to believe with all these people on the board that nobody has a clearcut answer, ill find out this i guess. THank
 
Look at the very first post, I told you I just did this last week. What do you need? A majority rule or something? Most people aren't going to know as you've found out. It's all hear say until you do it yourself.

I read your first post and you should look into the the actual configuration of what happens with a 1g cas, why you get random misfires and such.

Just for the record I am running 1g cas and DSMLink. It does fix the problem, just as long as you dont loose battery power. Dont be so quick to judge.
 
I don't get random misfires. Never have, never will. The problem is fixed. Ask Jeff O. from DSMChips.com. If he's reverse engineered all of the code for the 95 ECU, you would think he can answer the question.
 
On second though, don't ask. I did a long time ago. Here's the quesiton I sent to DSMchips.com and the answer I recieved asking about what changes take place and what do I do about them when putting the 95 ecu in my 98. Now I have it and he was right.

1) Yes, the firing order is different between '95-'96
cars and '97-'99 models, but that is easily remedied
by simply reversing plug wires 1-2, and 3-4.
2) The CAS signals are also inverted, by I take care
of that in the chip. :)
Just be sure to tell me that you have a '98 model when
ordering.
Nothing I do should effect the emissions whatsoever,
unless you get a little crazy and go with 850 or
larger injectors. Thats actually one BIG advantage of
my chip over the DSMLink: the DSMLink will effect the
new emission tests in many states that plug into the
ECU to see if its been modified/overridden.
I don't have the 2G chip ordering pages up yet, so for
now you just have to tell me what rev limit, launch
rpm, injector size/manufacture you have, and if you
want the fuelcut eliminated, or just raised. I can
also somewhat compensate for a hacked 2G MAS, but
unless you are making >400HP I find the car will run
better with a stock MAS.

Thats pretty cool that keydriver takes care of the inversion in the chip. DSMLink does not do that so if you were to lose battery power and didnt have a laptop you would be screwed. Cool info.
 
I don't know why someone would own DSMlink and not a laptop but that would suck. I was told there is just a box that you check on DSMlink that does the same thing to the signal that DSMchips does. It just says something like check the box for 97+ cars for the cas signal. Maybe it's new or something.
 
I think the original post was also asking about putting a 97 ECU into a 95 (not just the other way around). If you're getting DSMLink or another chip for the '95 ECU in the '97 it's a non issue there. The '97 ECU in the '95 is the one that could be slightly problematic. I think this should work fine but with the same possible minor problems already mentioned, just swap the plug wires and it should start right up and run fairly well. You can even test it out without removing both ECUs if you want, just pull one out and plug it in to the other car, leaving it hanging down next to your right leg (disconnect the battery on both cars before plugging/unplugging of course though) and swap the plugs.

And you can optionally order DSMLink with CAS inversion on by default so it will still remain on even when the battery dies and your tuning settings are lost and need to be restored from the laptop. In addition, that problem doesn't keep the car from running anyway, so you wouldn't be "screwed" even if it did default back to no CAS inversion.

BTW I'm not sure this is really "tuning talk."

My point was that even with a laptop, you can still get screwed. I dont leave my laptop in the car all the time and it sucks when I disconnect the battery and then my battery is dead in the laptop. In my case it is more extreme for the amount of work I do to the car though.
 
Ideally you'd trade in the chip for one with default settings good enough for the car to start and drive home (correct injector size, etc) every time you make major changes like that, but I know it's not always practical and there is some cost and time involved.
 
Correct. The 95 and 96 should have the same CAS so it should work just like it always did and without the inverted CAS signal and random misfire problem that is seen when swapping a 95/96 with a 97-99. May still want to test it out for a while though. I've heard of at least one person getting random misfire codes even when just swapping between a 95 and 96. I guess it can be caused by several different things such as a damaged sensor, excess vibration, electrical interference, etc.
