So to cut right to the chase I bought a 2g dsmlink setup for dirt cheap locally, it came with a spare ecu board which was supposedly bad......I noticed it was socketed and had a DSMlink chip in it. I looked it over really good using the ECMtuning Wiki guide and couldn't find any leaking caps, blown diodes or anything notice-ably wrong with it.
Or at lest I think the coating on it seem to be failing and is yellowy orange in lots of spots along with cracking, this common?

I took a look at the DSMlink chip and found an obvious problem, which is making me think the ECU it's self is in good working order.

Looking to sell it but I really really don't want to sell someone a bad part because that's a really big dick move and I'd feel terrible.
Looking for people's opinion's, pictures are hosted on photobucket so you can zoom in on them and really check the board out.

The DSMLink chip is clearly blown. perhaps from installing it backward. You could try sending it to ECMTuning and see what they say about repairing/replacing it. As is, it's pretty much worthless.

The color and cracking of the waxy conformal coating is normal.

That's not a machine pin socket so it's unlikely the board was socketed by ECMTuning. I can't see the board clearly enough to tell if there was any damage in the process of socketing that might make it bad.

Did you get the cable that goes with chip?

It appears to be socketed very very well, not at all an amateur job like ECMtuning show's on wiki. I'll post up some more pictures for your closer inspection steve, thank you very much for taking the time to help me out.
My main concern was with the yellowy coloured wax, it's mostly the back of the board covered in it but like I said I really didn't want to sell someone a bad ECU. I checked over everything else with a fine tooth comb to eliminate any other possibilities.

I got two ECU's one was a non-eprom which was most definitely socketed by ECMtuning(black board with ECMtuning printed right on it) the other was this one. Both had DSMlink chips in the sockets and it did come with the OBD2 cord, I made sure to do a little research to be certain I was making a wise purchase.

I agree with Steve, this looks blown from being installed backwards.... thus the "dirt cheap" price. Was this inspected before trying to run the ecu in the car to negate any possibility that it was your car that blew the chip up?

I don't have a 2g, and I got 2 ECU's. One was definitely a ECMtuning job, the other is this one in question. This board was the one they told me was blown, whether or not they installed the chip backwards I don't know. I'm not looking to sell it as a dsmlink setup but just as a socketed eprom ecu.

Likewise (but I wouldn't risk a DSMLink part in an unkown ECU) but that might be difficult without a working 2G to validate all the operations.
I have a harness I used to make sure a 2G ECU would start and run the car but it has indicators for the functions not found on a 1G so I could validate them.

Ya that's what I wanted to do as well, was get a 2g guy to test is. I only know one 2g guy (Nekid) but his cars in storage for the winter so that option was out. Thankfully the other ecu with link in it I know was in working condition because the seller started his car up and even hooked up his laptop and linked to the ecu.
Thinking I'll just have to sell its cheap I guess and make sure the buyer understands that its in unknown condition.
Thanks for taking the time folks, with out me being able to test the ecu there's nothing really more you guys can do to help me.
