So after finding out that my tranny overheated and all the friction clutches inside are gone I have decided to get a tranny cooler and gauge for my new GSX tranny that just set me back 1K.

However, I took off my front bumper and found a tranny cooler already there. So if we have stock tranny coolers why are our trannys still overheating. Should I just buy a bigger cooler or what?

Are they located under that driver side hole? I have a cover there, maybe I should take that off...hmmmm

95-96's the tranny cooler is on the drivers side front bumper. The 97-99 tranny coolers are located in front of your AC condensor. Your auto tranny has two hoses coming out of it. Follow them and they lead to metal lines and then to a tranny cooler. All 2G turbo cars have them from what I know. Buy the big B & M one. It's only $60.00. I bought a level 10 one a year ago and it was junk. It was smaller than the stock one and I call and bitched about it and they said it was used to run along with the stock one. Yay. So I tossed it and bought a B & M one I found in Summit. Way bigger and a perfect replacement. Use your stock one as an oil cooler!

This isn't entirely the case....I can't speak about the 2ga, but for the 2gb, the trans cooler for AWD is located on the drivers side, and for FWD it's located in front of the radiator.
You could either ditch the stock cooler (as a failed cooler is what did my trans dirty) or you can flush everything out, and hook up a larger one inline.
You can get trans coolers anywhere, IPT, Summit, Jegs... I like the Perma-cools, or the B&M units.

The bigger cooler I mounted in front of the AC condensor. Basically mounting it inside the core support. I am in the process of getting both my FWD and AWD 2G's trannies rebuilt. This time around I am going all out and running a temp gauge, using red line ATF, external filter, etc. The FWD has been a slut. I decided to downgrade. After going with a big T3/T4 with a T61 compressor I couldn't keep an automatic tranny to last more than 1000 miles. I had a PI billet TC with 4000 stall, translab shift kit, and the Alto rebuild kit. The last rebuild it ran fine and never slipped and all of a sudden one day I punched it and bam. Nothing works except reverse. You throw it into a foward gear and the car slams forward an inch and that is it. I wish someone would design bigger gears or make a custom tranny for our DSM's. For the rebuilds this time I ordered the IPT kits. This is pretty much my last resort. I know everyone says Russ Cox runs 10's, but I talked to him before and he has his tranny dropped and inspected every 10-15 times down the track which is 15 x a quarter mile. I'm looking for something that lasts that is driven for a while. Kevin Kiggley who had the fastest 1G auto did a 5 speed swap because he reached the limits of the automatic. He said with all the right stuff done to it 500 HP is the max. Upgraded gears and such need to be developed to handle more power than that. IPT seems very promising with the forums I have read on here, but everyone that has posted is running a tiny 16G or something similar. I want to hear from some automatic 2G guys that are at least running a 60-1 or bigger turbo on their automatic because I haven't had any luck. Pretty much at this point I am dropping down to a Evo III Big 16G so I can at least enjoy driving the car for 6 months straight. I hate downtime.
