What kind of problem are you having? The yellow stuff is normal, it is a coating put on the board during assembly. It is a 2g right? I've not heard of the 2g units having a big problem with caps like the 1g. They dont have as many caps I believe.
http://www.dsmtuner.com/forums/showthread.php?t=211143
and this morning i put ecu back and started the car...
it seem its normal again... i warmed up my car and i drove it out... after i drove like about 5 minutes
car was start shaking back and forth after about 3000 RPM and i stopped(samething happened yesterday). idle was not normal and car tried to stall again.. car seems to normal when is cooled off but after warmed up to normal temp.,
first thing happens is car shakes and if i keep driving, car stalls. car stalls even if i push gas a little... stalls right after i start the engine again or when i stopped....
my car is 99 GST

There is nothing visably wrong with that ECU board.

How did you open up the case to get it out?

Steve
i already told to the other guy who having problem with opend the case how to open it.. if you need it for him :)

like two month ago i installed the battery stablizer but i put the + and - reverse...
the battery stablizer is burned... and that maybe damaged ECU too??
car is totally fine when is not warmed up runs well....no stall...
soon as car got warmed up and keep driving, stalls shaking...

That's one of the reasons I asked (and send him to you) but I'd like to know too so I can start working on them.

first you gotta pull off the metal bracket.
the plastic case holds it from both sides and there are two narrow rectangular holes on the top and bottom on the edge at the side where all the cords goes
those four holes are the lock for the case
i stick in - two screw drivers in the gap between the case, one right above and other one beneath (you are facing the side where cords goes), to expand the gap and pull the ECU

I would go and see what the cel is saying. It almost sounds like a sensor problem?? I would start there just to see mabey it will help. As far as the stabilizer if you did that like 2 months ago I think anything related to that would have started sooner. Good luck
damn CEL is off now... cuz i reset it... gotta make more shaking to get it again :barf:

the first thing i said when i saw that picture was, YOU LUCKY SOB, ONLY ONE CAP?!?!?!??!" if it is the cap, you only have to replace one, and look to see if it is leaking, cuz there is this acid you can see/smell on your ecu. its the cylinder thingy sticking up, otherwise, let steve take care of you, as he is the ecu master

I doubt that cap would be leaking. It's pretty much a 1G problem.
I'd put your ECU back in the case and start looking elsewhere for your problem. You'll need to capture the CEL code for a hint where to start looking.

To date I've only seen a single bad cap on a 2G ECU and I believe it was damaged at some point rather than a problem with all the 2G caps like the situation on 1G boards. (but since I've seen many more 2g caps leak as well)

The '98 and '99 ECUs in the plastic cases are a 3rd generation design. They flashable ECUs like the EVO VIII from what I've learned. I'm not aware of anyone making flashes for the DSM ECU.

so why cant we use capacitors like the ones used in the 2g and call it a day. if the 2g caps dont leak, whats different about them that makes them so?

damn i just drove like 20 min i couldnt capture the CEL...
on the first 5min of drive, i felt shaking again and i pull over on the side of street and got stalled right after i stopped so i started the engines again and stalled again...
after few second i started it again and i step on the gas up to 1500 RPM on neutral.
RPM was trippin... it went down and up few times....
is this just huge boost leak??? but i dont see any thing like loose on intercooler pipes...
i didnt get stalled so i diver for 15min more and car is just like its normal no shaking no stall.... and no CEL
damn wtf is going on OMG

Hey, thanks for the help on gettin the ECU out of the case. I'm having the exact same drivability problems as you are: stuttering, stalling, jerking, you name it. I'm about to start just replacing everything because I'm running out of ideas.

As far as the ECU, I did take pictures and didn't notice anything suspicious. How do you post the image on there as large as you did? I tried uploading it and it limits you to 700x700 which is really hard to do anything productive with. Lemme know and I'll post my pics. Thanks.

WTF, this doesn't make any sense to me. If you replace the 1G caps before they leak you can pretty much call it a day.

Most capacitors don't leak past their seals. The two capacitors that leak on a 1G have defective seals, either from design or installation.

All electrolytic capacitors do have a service life which is why at some point all need to be replaced. This is one reason that I replace all three caps on 1G ECUs even though one of them isn't known to leak. It's 10+ years old and up there in it's service life. It's silly to replace the two others and not the last one.
