Hi Guys just wanted to confirm something before i install an AWD transmission on my car.

The question is if i install a 2g AWD transmission on my GST for now with out installing the drive shaft and rear end..will it be driveable???(pls keep in mind i need my car back ASAP since its been 1 week out of commision due to tranny problems)? I already have the transmission removed from my car and dont want install the FWD tranny and then remove it again once I can start on the conversion. I know it will still be a FWD until I complete the conversion.

you would need something to lock the center differential, like a viscous coupling eliminator, thats is how us awd guys get on a fwd dyno. but I dont know how safe it is to drive with this, I would imagine it would be harmless, but I have never tried this.

a welded center diff would also work.

without locking your diff though it will smoke your viscous coupler.(usually they split in half :rocks: )

There isn't really a good way to weld the center diff though, because when he was ready to use it again, he'd have to drop the tranny to replace the welded diff.

If you have the drive shaft for the awd tranny, you could lock that down since its external. Their really isn't a good way to do that though, not a safe way at least.

Welding the center diff is your best bet, but its gonna require another tranny drop when your ready for AWD again. It might be best just to finish the AWD project now.

You could not hook up the drive line and lock the drive shaft in place because the differential would try and send 100% power to the front which would eventually hurt the v.c. and if you let it free ball it would send the power all to the rear and hurt the v.c.

And I have replaced a center diff with it in the car, or he might want a welded on if this is a race only car.

Your best way would be to get a viscous eliminator, it is easy to remove it from the transmission even with it in the car, just pop off the outer casing, take off the snap ring and yank it out and put your v.c. back in.

initially i was going to get my FWD transmission rebuilt since i couldnt find that sucker at a good price. i didnt want to spend $1,000 for a used one. i found a 2g AWD that wasnt running for less than half of the price of rebuilt or used tranny and i have all the parts i need for my conversion. I dont want to put in the FWD tranny if i can install the AWD one for now and finish the conversion in a couple of weeks VS putting in the FWD tranny then removing it again and install the AWD..so basically im trying to save time and labor if i could.
