I searched and came up with nothing. dumb question but I was wondering if you could put a 2g awd tran in a 1g awd? im not trying to do it I was just curious if its been done. and what happened to the google search option on this site?

The search feature is at the top. Drops down from there. A good search would have easily shown that no it can't easily be done. 2g transmissions have 3 mounts on then. A 1g has only 1 and 3 on the motor instead. That is just the big difference.

Just something I put together in about 13 seconds

I know where the search feature is.. see the part where it says " I searched and found nothing". im not saying it like a dick so dont take it that way. I know how to search and i use the google search 99% of the time because I think it does a better job but now the google search thing is gone from this site. I should have used the word swap. anyway thanks for the help and links.

It also says " You can however put a 2g trans in a 1g without many problems at all. " Which is exactly what I asked and you said no it cant be easily done.

I didn't mean to come off as rude. The search feature needs to be changed back to search title's instead of entire thread. Ok once you fab the mounts, rebuild the axles, replace the 2g speed sensor with a cable driven one, which is way more work than it's worth, and modifying the shift linkage. Once you get past those points yes it is easy I suppose.

LOL okay I see what your saying but their was about 5 ppl that said you could put a 2g tran in a 1g but not vice versa. Im still gonna try it since the car is not my dd and if it doesnt work then no big deal, I will just put the 1g tran back in.

for the record I have a 2g and a 1g. i was talking about putting the 2g tran in my 1g.

Take pictures, document it and do a write-up for us if you do get it all to work!

i have 2 extra awd 2g trans and the space and tools so that why im so interested in trying it. That and I cant find a clear answer on it so im gonna find out hard way I guess .

First result in google btw.

From his Oct 1/98 posting to the Digest:

http://www.dsm.org/menu.epl?item=217

Keep in mind they are talking about holes being offset and such which makes that a FWD 2g tranny in a 1g (was speculated in this page)

As for AWD

It's been done and most importantly I've done it you'll need 2g shifter cables and brackets, 1g are too long, because the shift cable bracket is in a different spot. It will bind it'll feel fine when the car is off but once you turn it on you'll discover the stiffness in the line trying to push a rotating hub slider.

You won't be able to use a front mount anymore the front bar will have to be redone to move over to the left. On top of that you'll have to remove the fitting for the E-speedo that the 2g uses to swap over to 1g cable speedo.

You CAN use 1G shift cable IF you can get the selector arms off of the transmission.

[Club DSM] Has anybody ever installed a 2G transmission on a 1G?

So in otherwords don't do it :D

I've got a 2G trans in a 1g, its not that hard to do. 1g's have 3 engine mounts and 1 trans mount, you will need to remove all 3 mount brackets off the 2g trans and install the top bracket from the 1g.

The speedo drive gear will need to be swapped with the 1g unit, you can use the 1g shifter base and cables but you will need to bend(not the best idea in the world) or swap the selector arm which is held in by a roll pin.

I read that write up that was posted earlier but I dont remember having to drill out the mid plate for the starter bolts, the longer slave screws will be needed though. This was for AWD btw.

Hmm interesting, I'd do it if possible... seems I can find 2g AWD trans's everywhere, no 1gs though.

So the axles fit without any issues?

No, actually you can do it.

I said bending the shift cable too much will make them bind and make it very difficult to shift. They bend enough as is in original design.

And your front mount is important for roll stopping the side mounts just hold the engine up and they have least amount of roll resistance to engine torque.

I read that write up that was posted earlier but I dont remember having to drill out the mid plate for the starter bolts, the longer slave screws will be needed though. This was for AWD btw.

I just stated that only fwd will have an offset issue explained on that page with the engine plate is because it's not in the same location as awd.

Hmm interesting, I'd do it if possible

2 people saying they have it is impossible?

So the axles fit without any issues?

Obviously. 90-99 .

You don't use the extra mounts on a 1G, so it doesn't make a difference. This is why you can use a 2G trans in a 1G but you can't use a 1G trans in a 2G -- 1G's have 3 mounts on the engine and 1 on the trans; 2G's have 3 on the trans and 1 on the engine.

Why would you have to fab up mounts? He's not switching engines, just transmissions; he won't be using the extra mounts on the trans for anything. What do the axles have to do with anything? 1G & 2G AWD diffs are the same (other than 97-99 have a different gear ratio).
