I recently purchased a 1991 GVR4 with no motor tranny or tcase and im trying to hunt down a tranny and t case and I have run into this problem. I don't know what spline count to get. I got down there and tried counting the splines but I'm only getting 20 and there is a big gap in there. So i am wondering what spline this is and is the big gap normal.

Thanks, joe

Start counting from that master alignment notch "the big gap" and count all the way around until you get back to the gap, whatever number you have is the number of spline teeth or "notches" that you have. Double check your count too, one number could make a difference, especially when dealing with gear ratios and total multiplication factors...

The spine on the driveshaft doesn't matter; it should fit either transfer case. (I've had both on my car.) 22 or 23 spline refers to the input shaft of the transfer case. Earlier transmissions had 22 spline output shafts, later ones were 23 spline (sorry, don't know the exact years). Just make sure the transmission and transfer case you get have the same spline.

i always thought that the drive shafts always had the same amount of splines. i know the output shaft to side of the T case matters though.

I had a bad output shaft on my 23 spline tranny. Jack installed a 22 spline input on my later tranny because I could not find a 23 spline at the time. Its pretty easy to swap out. The 23 spline is known to be stronger but I have beat mine up a little with no issues. Jack himself has never destroyed a 22 spline and they are running one on one of there 11 sec cars.

The spline count on the yoke for the driveshaft is the same for all 1989-1999 5-speed AWD DSM's.

The 22-spline vs. 23-spline count refers to the input yoke on the transfer case, and to the output shaft in the transmission.

The 22-spline transfer case/output shaft came in 1989, 1990 and some very early 1991 transmissions, while the 23-spline transfer case/output shaft was standard equipment on middle 1991 through 1999 transmissions.

It is very easy to swap out output shafts, but it is in your best interest to get a good condition transmission (preferably rebuilt), and then find a matching transfer case (22-spline 1989-Early 1991 vs. 23-spline 1991-1999).

There was an updated transfer case that came on the 1995-1999 transmissions that have a different casting for the case itself, but it is still a 23-spline T-case that will bolt onto a 23-spline transmission (1991-1999 AWD).

Be sure to purchase the proper transfer case mounting bolts and the proper transmission bellhousing bolts from a Mitsubishi Dealer, as the proper hardware is very important.

Either way, you still want to purchase a transmission that was built between 1991-1994 (1G AWD Talon, Eclipse, Laser, GVR4, J-Spec GVR4, Evo1,2,3), since the shift linkage for a GVR4 does NOT match up with a 1990 Transmission with the 22-spline transfer case/output shaft. It isn't due to the transfer case or the output shaft itself, but the transmission case design and shift linkage design.

It does. Its there for alignment.

I've been told it's there to keep the gear oil that splashes onto the output shaft from hydrolocking the driveshaft. It lets the splines vent any trapped gear oil.

I don't recall a matching spline on the output shaft so it's not for alignment.
