20G vs the 50 trim, E/T difference?

I think alot of it is just the people that the bolt on 50trim appeals to. In my experience there are 3 different "breeds" of drag oriented DSMers

1. Small turbo guys ie 16gs, 14b, T28. Most of these guys just want a balanced reliable setup on the street and will use VP when they go to the track. Frankly I see more fast times around where I live from these guys, than with the bigger turbo crowd. IE ShapeGSX

Bahahaha!

I'm going to the track tonight, too! :sneaky:

you know EXACTLY what your talking about :thumb: PTE sponsors some of the fastest cars in the world. domestic and import. they have great customer service too. ive had three PTE turbos with no problems whatsoever. its cool to champion who you bought your turbo from but be more informed when you post.

I don't think that Ron Lummus has a $600 270 degree thrust bearing turbo on his car. I'm just guessing, of course. ;)

i have pte 50 trim went 11.8 @118 on 24psi and 100oct. now im looking at the gt35r or fp 3065

Why? You have a LOT left in that turbo setup. Put some 110 in and crank it up to 30psi!!! Feels like a totally different car at 30psi.

My buddy is buying a 50 trim for his talon and he has the option of upgrading his to 360 degree thrust bearing for $80. Should I tell him that he should do this or is it still junk. The turbo is a T04E hybrid and it came with a 270 in it but can be upgraded and it is a Garrett Turbo as far as I know only because it is under the Garrett Turbos section on the site.

absolutely. if he *ever* plans on running higher boost he'll need it. its just cheap insurance.

any input on the turbonetics 50 trim? thats what i have, i was sold on the 1 year no hassle warranty

Turbonetics 50 trim is an AGP 50 trim. Some people say the 1 year warranty is just extra insurance, and then some people say that 50 trim turbos are so bad that they need to offer a 1 year warranty to sell the turbo. All depends who you talk to!

It's special because it was built with the right parts from the beginning. Didn't use some POS 270 degree thrust bearing that ate itself up within 500 miles.

It's special because it's a hybrid.

The FP Green uses a TD06H turbine and a 50trim compressor wheel.

So calling it a 50trim is kind of a misnomer, since it's a hybrid.

So what your saying is that the S20g or fp's 20g with the TD06h turbine wheel is not a 50 trim??? You may want to re think that one over. :D

If anybody needs to rethink their comment its you.

Any turbo labeled 20g uses a TDO6 20g mitsu compressor wheel, regardless of what hot side is used.

so what about the sbr g50 its a 50 trim and everyone that has has absolutely no problems or complaints from what im told. i am going from a mitsu evoIII 16g to a sbr g50 very shortly and i dotn think that im going to have a problem with it. so all this 50 trim bash to me seems like bs. im not attacking anyone so please dont mistake this for an attack. i think we just need to give it time for these 50 trims to get into the right hands.

ROFL the 50 trim is tried and true. dre made over 500 to the wheels on pump with his 50 trim. granted thats atypical but plenty of people have made good power on 50s.

You need to rethink that one yourself. A td06 20G is NOT a 50trim.

Also, the 50trim is a solid turbo with many people running good times on them. Just because the quicklist isn't up to date doesn't mean there aren't plenty of 50 trims running great numbers. Two friends of mine have the PTE SCM50 and one ran a 12.3@120 and the other went 11.7@119. I recently dyno'd 305whp on my 54 trim with no tuning and low boost. So the turbo definately has the potential and many have exploited the power it produces.

No, then what is it??

And yes I do agree with times a 50 trim can make. I know someone here in town that dynoed 350whp in his GSX on a SCM50 and ran low 12's on low boost and mid 11's with spray and boost turned up.

It's a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries turbo.

Technically speaking? A 20G compressor wheel is a has a trim of 60. Actually, a 16g has a trim of 50.

Trim is a ratio of inducer to exducer. To figure out a wheel's trim, convert the inducer and exducer sizes to millimeters. Then do ((inducer^2)/(exducer^2)). Resulting number is the wheel's trim.

When someone says 50trim, they're referring to a garrett wheel. Calling any turbo a 50trim is kind of goofy, as not even Garrett names their wheels in this manner -- Their turbos are all Frame-Compressor Wheel Diamter.

For example, the GT3582R is a turbo based on a GT35 frame with an 82mm compressor exducer.

Anyway, enough rambling. No matter HOW you try to look at it, a 20G is never, ever, ever a 50trim.

Of all these choices I think only the Green and 20g are available internally gated. I would love a GT30R but I am not willing to change the manifold or go external. I wish FP would build an internal FP2052!

correct me if i'm wrong but isn't the td05 20g the only internally gated 20g besides the hahn "super" 20g

You would be correct. The TD06 housing has no provisions for an internal wastegate.

You could probably find an aftermarket housing with an internal gate, though.

Tort's TD06 comp. housing 20g is internally gated.

TD05H/06/06H refer to the turbine wheel, a "TD06-20g" could mean that it has a TD06 comp. cover or a TD06 turbine wheel. The most common setups, such as the BR20g, use the TD05H turbine wheel and the TD06 comp. cover.

well correct me if i am wrong steve, but the only 20g with a td05 compressor housing would be the SB bastard or "sleeper" 20g a laggy setup

If you are referring to Slowboy Racing as SB "bastard, then no, they did not come up with that turbo. Forced Performance made 3 of those turbos years ago for a very special few. However, now everyone wants one. Dunno why, they are hella inefficient, but people always trying to get their hustle on.

yes, you have to admit it would be fun to rock it - with the sleeper status and all

we had a huge 14b war going on locally here....and my buddy just picked up one of the SB bastards - its gonna be funny when he rolls up and spanks all the other 14b cars - we should have them scratching their heads ROFL

Let me know when he's got it on the car, i'll be glad to show him the 14b powah :D

yeah i just realized i watched you run down the track 3-4 times at e-town the other day

looked like a real clean black 1gb talon with somewhat soft suspension - cause the car was bouncing around between gears :)
