Hey Guys

Okay the project is a 95 gsx 7bolt. Head is off the car now, getting ready to pull the rest of hte motor/tranny to do the winter rebuild. We are going with a built auto IPT tranny, and would like to rebuild the block w/ a 2.3L stroker kit. Probably going to be going with a GT35R turbo or the like, it is going to be 99.9% a track car, .1% street car, so it is basically going to be balls to the wall.

Slowboy has 3 stages of stroker rebuild kits for the 7bolt, DSM Parts has a few. What we need help with is the best piston/rod combo for our setup as well as what compression pistons to get. We are shooting for mid 11s to start with but the setup should be plenty capable of a high 10sec run.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Jeff

Well I will be doing a similar set-up but a 1G m/t 6-bolt, but I will be going with a 35R as well, I talked with Darren at FFWD, and he said my choice for Crower I-Beams and ross pistons with an 8.5:1 CR will be great, and take that power nicely, IMO get I-beams, with ross pistons 8.5:1, or 8.8:1 wiull be good, so in other words I would go with SBRs stage 3. With a good tune, and some seat time you will hit high 10s with that set-up, I hope you wont be reving past stock rev limiter.

What do you mean by revvin past the stock limiter, Not recommended on a stroker???

Is not recommended because it would lead to side loading on the bores. Stroker motor should be rev to 7k to 7.2k. 7.5k on a stroker is too much stress. The beauty of a stroker is more torque and faster spool up, pretty much a great motor for street cars

I have a dumb question is crankwalk eliminated or lessened in the 7-bolt by going to the 2.3l since the crank is replaced? I'm going to have to reubild my engine soon and am very interested in the 2.3l set-up. I have seen a couple people converting there 7-bolt and no one questioned the crankwalk.

Here's another question since the stroker doesn't like to be ran at high rpms is it problem running it at 3500 rpms constantly on the highway?

Thanks,
Krummel21

yea it can be revved that high but what greddygst was talking about is the sideloading since it has slower piston speeds than a 2.0 engine and its more stressful for the engine to maintain those rpms durably. He could have bearing and other problems in the future from revving that high too much. I mean if he rebuilds his motors a lot then sure, but i wouldnt recommend going past 7.5 either on a stroker, i mean the whole reason to stroke the car is for more low end torque, and streetability. Thats why shep and some of the other top dragsters dont go stroker so they can keep their high revs.
I think the 2.2 destroker sounds nice, using like i believe a 91mm cranks ( my friend told me about it ) and a 2.4 block. Appears with that set up you can still keep your high revs and gain extra 2.2 liter displacement.

Where the heck are you guys getting this WRONG information???!?!?!?

I personally have a 7-bolt 99-block stroker, using a FFWD cryo'd/butchered crank with eagle rods and ross coated (S.O.B) stroker pistons, and am revving to 8500 on the stock 3G lifters.

The theoretical piston speed exceedance rpm for the 100mm crank in a 2.3L setup is approximately 8600rpms. This doesn't mean that if you exceed 8600 rpms, it is going to blow up on you. Jake Hanhardt's talon (using a 6-bolt FFWD butcher crank, Groden rods, and Ross uncoated pistons) with BLE solid lifters is revving past 10K rpms with no problems. Also for reference, Jake's old setup using a 2.3L stroker with Pauter rods and Ross pistons with a T4 A/R.70 GT3571R was doing 11.0's @ 129 on 22psi.

As for power/torque...well you will definitely enjoy it. Powerband is long and strong. Be sure to use at least a T4 A/R.70 turbine housing to flow, along with 272cams or better, a good intake manifold, and a good tubular exhaust manifold.

With my previous turbo, I was seeing peak torque from around 4800rpms, holding strong all the way to 7500rpms. Horsepower was above 550 from 4500rpms to 8000rpms.

You will have NO problems reaching your 11 or 10 second goals using a 35R (use a T4 A/R.70 turbine housing) and an IPT auto tranny.

To give you an idea, I am currently running a T4 A/R.96 divided V-band GT4088R, and I am getting into boost by 2800rpms, seeing 25psi by 3200rpms, and pulling EXTREMELY HARD all the way to 8500rpms. Pulls were in 3rd gear, 3280# street car. On 20psi at the track on Falken Azenis (slow 1.769 60'), I was doing the 1/8mile in 7.289 @ 104.44, and 11.219 @ 126.49mph in the 1/4mile -- on a quick street tune, running out of fuel capacity (boost comp'd, 1000cc injectors, stock/-6AN fuel lines, walboro 255HP, Aeromotive AFPR, 3.5 bar MAP sensor). I didn't get any time to tune it in and get a better pass, because I blew up another tranny that evening.

GOOD LUCK!!! :thumb:

Yeahh, by the way people, stroker = greeater piston acceleration, and speed at a given RPM. Think about it: the crank is rotating at the same speed, but the piston has to cover more distance (LONGER stroke).

The BIGGEST reason why people say to not run the RPMs up too much on a stroker is the increased piston acceleration. There was a thread in which someone (I believe donjuan) did the math. Basically a 2.3L at 7500rpm is equal with respects to piston acceleration as a 2.0 liter at something like 7100 rpm. (total guess, can't remember the actual number.. I'm personally setting the RPM limit at 7500 on my 2.3L)

the "sideloading" is a different issue, and really not much of one. You may have an increase rate of "ovalling" of the bores, however this does happen stock as well. Piston rings may wear faster, but again, this depends on how the engine is maintained and driven. If you wait to get on the car until it is fully warm, you shouldn't have any problems.

this may vary well all but true but for the average joe who needs some what of reliability out of the car and doesnt need to rebuild a motor every yr i would just play it say and keep the revs under 7.5... Maybe 8k on extreme occasions but just my opinion.
I still think the 2.2 destroker sounds nice though but dont hear too much info on ppl running those possibly from the cost...
