So, to start, I have read this thread and there was a LOT of good info. I'm suspecting it to be the CAS, but wanted to start a new thread. Hopefully have some concise info for future people, but also, my scenario is a bit different, so in case we need help, I wanted to hook up with a few of you smart guys.

So this is our GHS high school shop project GSX. We have a 6 bolt block with a 95 2g head. We just installed out Kiggly Crank Sensor kit. So, we only have spark from the 1&4, nothing from 2&3. We tested the coil and it ohmed out ok. I found an article on how to test the resistors HERE, but it sure looks like a funky process. Since we know that 1 is working, can we somehow swap the signal? I'm not sure if that is possible. I haven't been out to look at the car since I started reading thread. (I'm busy teaching wood shop right now, trying to gameplan before the auto kids come.) So, I'm uncertain of the condition of our CAS. I guess we just need to test that before doing anything else.

We also have DSMlink, which I have yet to ever even hook up and figure out. Right now I know that the previous owner (kid) who had the car had it setup for him and the 880 injectors. So far I've just plugged the ECU in assuming it is good. By any chance can it be used to help diagnose anything? I'm not sure if it has any self testing features. I really need to read up more on it, or watch some videos. (My job is tough because this project is going on, while i'm trying to align and install carpet on a classic mustang, drop a motor we just built into a Nova, sew up new interior on a 49 Ford, and more and more and more. Painting an El Camino and a Bug. Building a motor for the bug.) Anyway, I appreciate you guys helping because my brain is spread thin.

I would reread that article on testing the power transistor. You can swap the coils and see if the problem follows.

It is a 1995. Yes, I posted a link to the "how to test power transistors" in my original post. We will give that a shot. I've never used an AA battery before for a test. This should be interesting and fun. We will test the CAS first. Seems easier.

CAS shouldn't be your problem or you wouldn't have the other coil.

Go after the coil itself again or the power transistor. Easy to swap coils and see if the problem follows. If it does you found a bad coil. If it doesn't then you ruled out the coil and can now chase wires, power transistor etc.

Ok, news flash, so, since we inherited this project we have been working with two vehicles and making one. Sadly our second engine was stolen. All that said, is a 95 cam shaft gear/sprocket, is there something on it that that sends the signal to the cam sensor? I remember one having a different looking disc on it, but we lost that a long time ago and didn't think about it.

Where can I get one if that is the problem?

Wish I had seen this prior till now. I have a spare 95 cam gear sitting under a bed in my spare bed room. Oh well, it will find a home one day.

OPs problem went in a different direction, but a tip for those looking to buy 2nd gen PTUs: I bought an IPD PTU from O'Riley's and received a re-boxed OEM unit for half the price of the dealer. YMMV of course, but this seems to happen frequently with these cars for me (555 suspension pieces reboxed as Moog, OEM knock sensor in a Standard box, etc.).

Sounds like you found tge problem with the cam gear. Good luck Joe! Keep us posted.

The coil that sends spark to 2/3 is controlled by the cas, I have a friend I helped figure that problem out with his car the cas was shattered but because it was hidden behind the intake cam gear sprocket I didn't notice it right away. So where the heck were you when I was in high school, your class would've made my DSM journey so much easier! Lol

Yeah, I figured you guys might have one, but I wanted to order it and get it shipped asap. I hate having down time with the kids. We'l be diagnosing out power windows until it arrives... ;)

Yup, I try to make a fun class. I donated my old EG civic. Got a classic mustang, Nova, El Camino. Even a Merkur XRTi. Lots of fun cars.
