Hey guys, I have a few questions involving 1g's and GVR4's. I just wanted to start off by saying I've been in the DSM community for 8 or 9 months now, so I know my way around to say the least. However, with all the technical stuff I've learned over this time, I have never had one question ansewred:
Will stuff from a 1g work on a GVR4?

The reason I'm asking this somewhat silly question is that I have wanted a 1g ever since I've joined this site... but now locally, I have found a great deal on a 91 GVR4.

So, I know the motors are the same, and in the tranny the GVR4 1st gear is like 6mph taller than other DSM gears, but I need to know other stuff. For example, if I was to buy a 1g FMIC kit off SBR or a site like it, would it fit on the GVR4 without major modification (I know cutting is necessary, but I'm not worried about that)? Another example might be the air intake pipe. If I was to buy a 1g intake off Dejon Tool, would it fit more or less perfect on the GVR4?

Thanks for the help.

if memory serves me correct a GVR4 intake pipe looks alot different than a 1G.......one other thing I know of is the ECU plugs are totally different too so if ya dont have an EPROM then your going to have to find a GVR4 EPROM ecu.

The VR-4 used a different intercooler setup then the talon/eclipses. It used a little tiny front mount about the size of an oil cooler.

Intercooler cores are basically universal minus the mounting points. Ill see if I can find a VR-4 specific kit.

Engine wise, I believe they are considered a 1G from here on out. The intercooler is the only thing I could dig up that is different. Where are all these galant guys at?!

I love the Galant. They just plan kick ass.

Well I know the stock intercooler is FM, but if I was to put an aftermarket FMIC... say a SBR 7" Street Core... would that fit? I'm just wondering about the space between the throttle body and the mounting points... I have no idea if that would work or not. The GVR4 intake pipe curls around the UICP or maybe the radiator pipe, I'm not quite sure. I'm wondering:

If I was to do aftermarket FMIC and intake pipe, would it all work?

parts from a 1g do work with a galant vr4. as long as you use the galant sensor.ie coilpack and transistor. but motor wise all those parts are the same. oh by the way, if you want a talon instead of the galant i ll trade you my TSi for your VR4. LOL. good luck with it. they are nice cars.

An SBR FMIC setup for a first gen dsm will not fit a galant. the mounting points for the ic are off as well as the piping. galants come with tiny front mounts and the cold pipes run through a small hole in the front, big enough to fit a 2.5" pipe. Since the battery on the galant is where the air filter is on a dsm the cant share the same intake unles bsttery is relocated. They also share the same ecu, but has different mounting points. they have the same coil pack also.

Alright, just to correct a few things said so far, yes, the intake routing of piping is a little different. The same K&N will fit in either air box, but who keeps that anyways? The intercooler is different as well, and a new kit for a DSM will NOT be a bolt on affair. There are a few shops that make kits, or you can mess with a DSM kit a little to get it to fit.

As far as the ECU goes, all vr4 ecu's are eprom, so YAY there. The only difference between a dsm and galant ecu is the fuel and timing tables. The caps still leak in the galant ecu's, so get them replaced. They are plug and play, but it won't run optimal from swapping from either car to the other. However, they can be made exactly the same with just swapping eproms (get one burned). The mas is a little better in the galant as it is "hacked" from the factory.

That stuff aside, they are basically the same. Downpipes for a 1g will fit on the galant, but the rear of the exhaust is a little longer. Obviously it's harder to find some body and interior parts because of their limited production, but hopefully whatever you need can also be found in a base galant.

Ohh yeah, and galants are way cooler :)

Hope that helps and let me know if you have any other questions!

By the way, for anybody that is wondering, the only differences in 91-94 turbo eprom ECUs are in the eprom, so it's all correctable!

I have a 1g intercooler on mine, The radiator had to be cut a little. Now wished I had gotten one specifically for a GVR4.

if you want to run a aftermarket IC then you will be doing some cutting on the front end and I had to modify my bumper and grill.

I'm in a similar boat, man. I just picked up mine in Clovis, NM this past weekend.

My intercooler plans revolve around a SRT4 IC I sourced for free from a buddy. It looks like it will work out great with a DSM radiator installed.

You will need information you learn here for sure, but I've also found that a great resource is the forum at GalantVR4.org I've got the same screen name over there that I do, well, everywhere, so I'll see you around, I bet.

Get the Galant. Mine is dead as a stone at the moment, but I tell you what, I see it sitting in my driveway for three days, now, and I can't wait to drive it. They truly are bad ass.

Agreed!

When I had my galant, I got an Ebay 24x12x3 intercooler and custom made my own pipes exhaust and intake. I know of only 2 intercooler kits for the galant and those are DSM Motorsports & Extreme Motorsports. I have seen one float around on ebay once before. but Both of those range in the $1200 for the piping and intercooler, very good kits though. Mine was aprox. $500 for intercooler and pipes.

Hey, what's up DR1665? gvr4.org participant here, I actually posted in your thread;)
