I know I'll have to switch bellhousings so the trans can mount to the car. But can it be done? has it been done? Is it just pulling the bellhousing off of the gearbox and switching them?

I ask because I need a transmission soon and finding 2g parts is as hard as finding a clean prostitute in Albuquerque, NM! LOL Not speaking from experience! LOL But anyway I have 10 people right now with low mile 1g transmissions, 92-94. All for cheap prices.

You will need to fully disassemble the transmission to swap a bellhousing. You will also want to use a 2g intermediate case, reverse gear and reverse shaft and then the 2g speed sensor. You will need to use the 2g shift selector assembly as well, and change all the bearing races to match the gearset being used.

Also, you will want to use your matching final drive gearset if there is a tooth count difference between the two. The early 2g has the same final drive as 1991-1994, and the 97-99 2g's have a 57-tooth ring gear to match the final drive difference in the transfer case.

It's all doable, you just need the right tools.

Damn 97-99's making shit more difficult! Ok. Well I'll consider that a last case scenario. I really don't want to do hard core work to have a working transmission but its close to being my only option. This state sucks for DSM's.

If your transmission is good and you're the one taking it apart then just fix what you need to fix. You dont' have to buy another complete transmission, only parts. If you're sending it out then you don't need a donor either. You already realized you have to swap the externals, doesn't sound like there is anythinig wrong with yours unless it's just a shifting issue. Either one requires complete diassembly.
