what all is needed to do a complete swap over already got the motor and the ecu but what is left to get , Most of the places that ive priced an engine thru is saying it an added cost for a 2G cause they are using 6 bolts for their rebuilds :beatentodeath:

I've done it before and it is alot more work than a simple engine swap! also you should start looking into getting dsmlink if you want the car to run smoothly without misfires etc.

:notgood:

I am running a 6 bolt with a 2G head in my 97 and not having problems. This has been written up time and time again. Please look in the tech guide under here:
http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/articles-engine-fuel/152329-how-do-6-bolt-swap-what-you-need.html

I don't have a CEL or misfires. I chose to put a 2G head on mine simply to make it easier for the my sensor hookups. I've had Zero problems since the swap (500 miles ago) and it is working perfect.

Follow the guides around here. Make sure you have everything you need before going at it. The more prepared you are the easier the swap will be. It's not that difficult, just make sure when you remove any bolts, you know where they go when you put them back in. I used seperate ziplock bags and labeled them. It just makes life easier.

Even better, before you remove them, take a picture with your digital camera and whatever number the camera assigns to the picture, write that on the ziplock bag with a sharpie after you remove them.

Ya whats the deal with the 6 bolt? I mean i have a 92 GSX and i want a 2G. All you 2G guys are getting 1G swaps, and i dont understand why? Right now i got big problems with my 1G and its got less than 100K on it. I have posted whats wrong with my car so i dont get why you guys are getting my engine, i can't go fast right now so whats the point?

So if anyone can fill me in on this subject that would be much appreciated. Thank you

Bud, 6 bolt blocks are less likely to crank walk then 7 bolt blocks (95-99) and the crank can handle about twice the HP of a 7 bolt motor which came in 92-99 dsms as far as I am concerned. Do a search for crank walk and then you'll be happy you're in a 1st gen.

Thank You 1st of all, but

So then why is my engine kinda broke, if its better than a 2G?
I love my car dont get me wrong, It saddens me that I cant drive it!
Im a college student who only will have one day for a teardown, and ive never done that yet. Can you give me some more input on what i need for my engine so i can get it back to normal? I have posted on the newbie thing look for a post from me in diagnosis.

hello all,

its been a while since I've been on, we completed my engine swap in July and i have been sporting around town as well as down the local jersey sure in my eclipse. recently i have been having a bad misfire, it has since got to the point where i cannot drive the car, when putting the scanner on, its telling me, its an egr valve, while doing the 1g swap in my 2g, i thought i remembered eliminating the egr valve, can anyone help me out please.

Do you have your cables hooked up correctly ? Remember the firing order on the coil pack is 4,1,2,3.

ive got a question also.
ive got a 95 gsx with a 93 talon motor in it 4g63t
well, last night i blew the head gasket. i replaced the thermostat last week bc it was overheating. and also put in new coolant.
i lost compression, the car doesnt start.
it aslo had the idle surge to.

im not sure if i want to put a 93 talon motor back in it or if i want to put back the oriinal gsx motor in it. not sure if i can use the aftermarket bolt ons with the original gsx motor.

also not even sure if i really want to rebuild it. i was thinking bout jus selling it with a blown headgasket. i just dont want to run into more problems and scared bc of im not the best techinician.

there's a lot of things i learned while doing my swap:
  • when using 1G water neck, a 1G lower radiator hose has a common issue with being pinched, a simple fix is replacing it with a Gates 20820 or Dayco 70783.
  • When using a Kiggly crank sensor, u can keep ur late model 2g CAS in it but a 1G would work too. 95-96 needs to be inverted with ECMLink V3
  • 1G timing lower timing cover should be used but modded to fit
  • Always use the stock Crank Pulley (harmonic balancer), aftermarkets wont help u, just hurt u. Its the same 90-99.
  • Use 1G hydraulic tensioner and 1G hydraulic tensioner arm. People rarely mention that 2nd part
  • Timing pulleys are the same 90-99. Didnt know i could of re-used them from my 2G because they were new but i bought another new kit anyways.
  • 2G head needs head bolt holes drilled out to fit the larger 1G head studs. I used a 1/2" wide, 6" long drill bit. That's another thing i had to find out from word of mouth, and clean the f@ck out of your head afterwards.
  • Almost every gasket u put on, coat both sides with an RTV
  • Almost every screw on connection can be sealed with High-Tack
  • When filling radiator, mix coolant concentrate with distilled water, never anything else.
  • Use OEM replacements on the parts that matter... ie oil pump, gaskets, water pump, flywheel bolts, etc.
  • Label your electrical connections and bag your bolts with labels in them. I spent a lot of time on the 2G Electrical Pictoral on here as well as measuring and re-purchasing a bunch of bolts.
These are just a couple things off the top of my head of lessons learned. Hope it helps others along the way.
I may come back and add more as i keep building
