Is there any way to tell if i have a 1g head or 2g head by just looking at..

Im asking because a couple years ago i had somethings replaced at a shop and they screwed some other things up and i didn't even think to ask them because i was so mad that my friends advised me to stay away from the shop so that i wouldn't get the cops called on me (that should tell you how fed up i was)..

anyways any input would be great

There are a few differences, the easiest would be the wording on the side (if i'm not mistaken beside the CAS). 2g should write "G6K" while 1g head will have "20".

Here's a visual comparison, 2G head on top, 1G head on the bottom. Note the additional bosses for the 2G thermostat housing on the 2G head.

thanks for pictures 19Eclipse90, they totally helped me :aha: , for a long time I thought I had a 1g head.. altho it did come with the valve cover that carries the mitsubishi logo witch I was old only come on the 1g engines..

Are there more then one version of the G6K 2g head? I ordered lifters to rebuild a head I bought awhile back, Got the lifters at NAPA and there is a size diffrence between the lifters in the head and the lifters from NAPA....

I'm at a lost and is the only thing holding up my build..

I dont mean to high jack the thread but I'm at a lost..

thanks

Some people change valve covers as much as they change their oil. As you now know, the valve cover should never be a factor used in determining what engine is in any individual 4G63 powered vehicle.

There were different lifters used throughout the years, but they are all interchangeable with regards to size. Mitsubishi ASA now lists the same part number (MD377054) for all 1990-1999 4G63 DSMs. The differences mainly consisted of larger oiling holes on the head of the lifter itself in the later versions which helps alleviate lifter tick. Diameter and overall length should be the same. I know there are decent deals running around online for OEM lifters -- known as "3g" or "revised" lifters. If I were to replace lifters, I wouldn't use anything else.
