Ok, I race my 91 Laser 2.0 N/T 5 speed at a dirt track. Overhauled the engine this winter (20 over pistons, BSEK, new lifters, oil pump, drilled the oil bypass on the filter housing, spark plugs, fuel filter, air filter, removed ps pump, ac compressor, EGR, evap, new clutch) made sure everything was hooked up correctly on install and precisely timed. It'll start right up every time but when I accelerate whether its in neutral or in gear it bogs out and sputters at about 3000 rpm and on the track occasionally I can get it up to about 5000... The conclusion I've made is the MAF. I could very well be wrong and so I decided to ask here. I'm pretty sure I have the only 1G dsm's In the whole county, so finding one off of a parts car isn't really an option to try. I don't know what else to check, I'm out of ideas!! The race is Sunday and I can order a new MAF and have it here later this week but I'd hate to spend that kind of cash and have a repeat of the last race (I was on my 5th/10 laps when the checkered flag dropped)
Thanks!

Negatory Ghostrider... Isn't doing what's described in the "bucking" article, it basically falls on its face... I haven't really driven it enough to throw a cel I don't think. I'm out fixing fence, when I get home il go take er for a spin and jumper the plugin... See if she"ll tell me what she's feeling.

Sorry man I though that was going to help you with your problem. I'll keep researching around for you my friend.

Got home, drove it a mile, made it do what it does quite a few times... No cel

Thanks man! Appreciate it!! I've been looking every chance I get... I've been trying to upload a video... Won't let me... Any ideas on that? Lol

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Should be a video from this evening of what its doing.. Recorded off of my phone so its not the most steady video..

Ok.... pulling my hair out now..... got a BRAND NEW MAF... didnt do anything different.. checked the gap of the spark plugs, firing order, fuel supply in and return, you name it. I'm completely lost any more ideas?? :ohdamn:

Sounds like your loosing spark in more than one cylinder. Possibly a bad power transistor or coil. Could also be bad wiring/ loose pins on either end of the harness related to those components.

Checking timing again and the cas and check compression. Make sure you have the everything torqued in the head correct? Pretty nasty sounding. Could be your video that makes it sound like that

timing is spot on, CAS is the right way, injectors could possibly be the problem, il check it out.... i will say that after all that ive done tinkering with it, seems like its hitting 5K alot more often, but still bogging out.. I think il go and drive it home from my parent's (2miles) and back in the morning, see if maybe driving it more frees up the injectors because ive had it with this car for today LOL tomorrow is a new day..

check your tps make sure its putting out the correct voltage. also make sure you have good gaskets and a good tight seal on the throttle body and intake manifold. also check the seal on the injector grommets to the cylinder head.:thumb:

new gaskets on the trhottle body and intake, both nice and tight.. just pulled the injectors, hooked em up to the fuel rail, and wiring harness, turned it over and had nice uniform cones of mist... When I go back out, I'll check the coil and wires out.:banghead:

OK... possible breakthrough.. opened up the ecm and there was corrosion.. would this cause these symptoms? I hate not having an exact parts car, i have a 94 Eclipse 5 speed but its a 1.8, so theres nothing much motor wise to swipe off of..

lets see if I uploaded the picture...:|

some more over by the "arch thingy"??

Have you check timing belt timing? If its off a tooth or two... it will run very poorly.

Yep, timing is perfect

checked the ?primary? ignition per manual (the plugin with 3 prongs) and got .9 ohms, which is within spec... how exactly is the secondary checked.. the manual just confused me.. I'm a visual learner LOL any threads?

checked spark with a tester, all 4 had nice strong blue strikes

That corrosion looks like something began leaking, it's not the best thing but I honestly don't.think that's your problem..

Your secondary ignition parts are things like the spark plugs, spark plugs wires, ignition coils and so on I believe

I'm lost of its not the ecu, I've checked EVERYTHING I can see/think of.. I've gotta be overlooking something.... Any more ideas?? I found a car with the right ecu... But it's in a DIY junkyard 2.5 hours away. But if that doesn't seem like the culprit, I won't make the trip if I don't have to.

Crimped off the fuel return line thinking maybe low psi/volume, no difference.

Pulled off the spark plug wires, measured the Ohm's, every one of them measured OL... as in no continuity????? every single one..... took a screwdriver and clipped on an alligator clip (thats what I have soldered onto one of my leads) and wedged it inbetween the rubber and the crimp on the plug side, and the other end to the crimp on the coil side. I'm 99% sure I made connection on both ends.. could it be that it has enough "juice" to make it through at low RPM but it cant get through at high and make it across the plug?? seems unlikely to me that if it reads OL it could deliver spark even... thoughts?

ok... I feel dumb...... carbon cores....

Drove 160 miles one way to get the ECU, beautiful refurb for 60 bucks, didn't fix it.. Hopped back into my Neeeeeooooon and drove another 100 miles to Norfolk to Auto Zone for plug wires and a fuel pump. Checked out with 5 minutes til close LOL. Went out, put the new wires on this morning, no change. I'll be putting that fuel pump in this morning... Crossing my fingers!

Besides an issue with the wiring relating to the coil pack or power transistor, it could also be something with the tps. Make sure the ground for it is good. Make sure its receiving a constant 5v power supply. Make sure at closed throttle the signal wire is putting out around .51-.54 volts, and at wot it is putting out close to 5volts. Also check and make sure the pins are secure at the tps and ecu end.
