Hey guys! I decided to put my car down for the winter and pay some attention to detail. I pulled out my main engine harness. I am going to pull the fuse box this weekend.

I do have a 90 TSI and have printed out the entire 1990 harness identification thread. As well as the numerous other threads with 1G harness information. I am following a couple 1G tucked builds as well. I also purchased the complete 1990 service manual which should be a nice upgrade to my Chiltons manual and bought a nice set of soldering equipment.

I do have a couple questions. First I am looking to relocate the fuse box to the inside of the car. I'm guessing wires from the fuse box would need to be extended right? Would this be the only way to do this? Are there other methods? Will the voltage drop because the longer distance of travel? Is it safe for the ECU?

Next I've deleted all emissions, AC and other accessories. I'm also looking towards deleting PS. Before I rip into the harness. Do any of the wires that I will delete tie into existing wires that lead to the ECU? Or will it affect any other sensors or ECU if their removed?

I just extended mine with more factory wires into the car everything worked fine, try turbo sax his thread.

Thanks so much for the help! That indeed is one of the threads I'm examining! So I'm guessing it's not gonna hurt hurt any electrical components if I lengthen the connections?

Also wanted to ask if anyone knew any good how to videos for working with automobile electrical systems?

Your welcome and no videos I just looked at some threads here got a plan and got to work im always working on my dsm, once I did my first timing belt job I self taught myself just about everything else. Im pretty well rounded wiring was fun I did a tuck and a fusebox job on my last dsm. Make sure you are organized, and youll be just fine.

Asking this question makes me assume that you aren't very experienced with wiring. What kind of video are you Looking for? How to solder wires or what? I usually don't recommend wiring modifications such as these unless you know what you are doing off the bat. A mistake could cause all kinds of problems including a harness fire.

Great! Thanks. I'm pretty much exactly the same as how you mentioned yourself.

I am very familiar with soldering and how wiring works. I've been working on car stereo systems for around 4 years now and am now gonna give this a shot. I am always looking to gain knowledge or good tips that will help along the way. That's mainly why I asked that question. I do have tons of time to do this right.

Yes make it a project just label everything and get creative I did a wire tuck on this one I have now but im going to do engine detail one day, it will be fun. I thought it was pretty easy, go for it its what makes this hobby fun and different.

Anyone know good places to find a quality wire look. I'm looking preferably for a nylon mesh type of loom. Something like ECMLinks GM and SD cables. Are there any parts stores that sell this kind of loom? If not what sites? Also what would be the ideal sizes of the sleeves I'd want to get? Thanks guys!

look on ebay for the loom i got black with the white tracer like ECM link off there for cheap and it was nice stuff... wish i had more time to finish my relocate and tuck..

Hey did you check out wirecable.com i have some sites on my favorites at home ill try to find them for you, but i did a google and found a few sites that have some nice covering like my ecmlink cable.

Ive seen that but for the money and fun i can make my own not exactly like it but i did one before
and it worked for me less than 30 bucks, oem wire from other dsms i had heat shrink and some wire loom. Also a ecu wire tuck.

This is how the ballers do it...

I've seen that thread. It was a milspec harness. I know the tool for those connectors is close to $200. My plans are to eliminate all the unnecessary connectors. I am then going to shorten up the engine harness and lengthen the fuse box harness.

What size loom would you recommend for the base part of the harness? Mainly the thickest part of the entire harness after its been reduced in size.

Alright guys. I came across another question but didn't want to start a new thread. Its concerning the length of each wire. What are some of the ways you guys with the wire tucks have determined the correct length of each wire? I have almost all of the loom stripped off the harness and before I unravel it I want to be sure how I'm going to do this. My idea is to take each harness and take it off of the main harness one at a time connect it in the engine bay. Then route it back to the ECU harness and put it back in the ECU connector after shortening it. Anyone have any different methods that they have followed. Everything will be labeled and only one harness at a time will be removed to avoid any confusion.

I just did like your doing yours i connected everything the best i could then slid it through the firewall i also did my fusebox too.

So did you take an individual connector off of the main harness then route that connector. Or just take the main harness and cut it down and reroute it? I will also be deleting any leftover plugs that are not going to be needed.

I just cut it down, like on my car now its kinda messy but i shortened wires rerouted my injector wires under the rail, and the main area is just loomed and taped together in one area, ill redo it later but everything i didnt need is gone my firewall is completly clean, except for my wiper motor and afpr haning there and my brake braket, ill send some pics to you. Its all functional its fun to change things up.

I'd really appreciate some pictures. :thumb:

Hey guys. I'm in the middle of shortening my harness. So far I've deleted the obvious clips that I know aren't needed to run the engine. I'm stuck with some of the clips. I don't wanna go chopping stuff out before knowing what their used for. I basically am referencing from a thread put together by one of the site moderators. I also am using the factory service manual. I can't seem to find whether or not these clips are needed? I'm hoping that some of you guys can help me out. I am going to provide a list below of what I don't know and another of what I've already deleted. Any help is appreciated. Thanks guys. Here's also the thread I'm using as a reference. Also is there any thing you guys see I'm missing that should be deleted?

Can these be removed from the harness:

A-13 Control wiring harness and solenoid valve harness assembly combination
A-52 Control wiring harness and solenoid valve harness assembly combination
A-55 Fuel pump check connector
A-56 Noise condenser
A-57 Defogger relay
A-59 Engine speed adjustment connector
A-60 Ignition timing adjustment connector
B-00 Noise filter ( For tachometer)
B-04 Idle speed control actuator
B-08 EGR temperature
B-26 Oxygen sensor ( I run narrowband)
C-56 Oxygen sensor check

Here's what I've already deleted:

A-09 Wiper motor
A-51 Waste gate solenoid
B-16 A/C magnetic clutch
B-31 Engine coolant temp switch for A/C

A-13 Control wiring harness and solenoid valve harness assembly combination -- yes
A-52 Control wiring harness and solenoid valve harness assembly combination -- mislabeled on your part, no
A-55 Fuel pump check connector -- see above thread
A-56 Noise condenser -- see above thread
A-57 Defogger relay -- see above thread
A-59 Engine speed adjustment connector -- see above thread
A-60 Ignition timing adjustment connector -- see above thread
B-00 Noise filter ( For tachometer) -- do you want your factory tach to work?
B-04 Idle speed control actuator --no, unless Link has a way to simulate this, which I do not know.
B-08 EGR temperature -- yes
B-26 Oxygen sensor ( I run narrowband) -- technically, I suppose yes
C-56 Oxygen sensor check -- yes

Now, having said all that, there's no reason some of these things couldn't be consolidated a little bit. I'm mainly looking at A-52 there but I'd have to look it up to make absolutely certain.

Sweet thanks a lot!!! That's so helpful! Now I can start getting rid of things! I'll be sure to chime in on this thread if I come across any harness delete related questions.

I deleted some more clips off of the harness today but one of the most tricky was the oxygen sensor. It had a lot of wires tied into the detonation clip. I basically clipped every wire that had to do with the oxygen sensor and left the wires that were tied to the detonation sensor clip. I laid out a diagram of how I deleted it. Can sometime tell me if this is correct? I want to be sure it won't be a problem for the detonation sensor to work properly. Keep in mind where incur the wires I did not leave any kind of excess wiring showing or exposed
