In order to access hard to reach parts around and below the fuel injector rail, I disconnected the rail by removing the three bolts that secure it to the engine. (I pulled up the rail just enough to gain access. I noticed in the process the fuel injectors attached to the rail lift up off the engine.

Since I've never done anything with fuel injectors...

1. Is there anything I should be concerned about as I once again reconnect the rail/injectors back to the engine?

2. (Its an old car and probably has the same factory installed injectors). Just doing a visual inspection, what should I be looking for in terms of gunk, etc?

3. Is there a way to clean the injectors with some type of spray? If I have to remove each injector from the rail, how big of a hassle is that?

In all the years I've been servicing my cars, I've never "played around" with fuel injectors.

Thanks in advance for your help.

You'll need new injector insulators that go between the head and the injector since the old ones are likely rock hard and won't seal anymore. Not a bad time to replace the other two parts, the injector sheet that fits between the injector body and the fuel rail to apply the pressure holding the injector down and the o-ring that seals between the injector and the inside of the fuel rail.

Thanks so much for the information and picture guide. It helps this novice with learning.

In terms of cleaning, is there any need for that?

Also, I've never removed a fuel injector from the rail. Is it pretty intuitive? The parts you are recommending seem to require full removal of the injector.

Thank you again.

Here’s a nice how-to on injector removal and component replacement: Removing injectors and replacing O-rings

Cleaning injectors - any foreign material ought to be wiped clean before reassembly, other than lube for the pintle cap into / through the insulator. Same with the O-ring side into the rail.

If you’re talking internal cleaning, spray cleaners aren’t going to offer much help and you’d be better served sending them off for professional inspection and cleaning. I would only recommend this if you are experiencing an issue that you have diagnosed to be directly related to the fuel injectors or if you simply want the peace of mind.
