I have a 90 Ecplise GS automatic with a 2g 7 bolt motor mated to a 1g auto tranny. THe tranny was fine when I had the stock 6 bolt in it but since the 6 bolt went in the car has been acting wierd. When I come to a stop at a light it will act like its going to die and then lunge forward even though I have my foot on the brake. I have read about tranny problems on 1g autos but it was fine until the 7 bolt swap. Had to shim for it to bolt up but everything seems to be working fine except for that. I know I will get replies asking why I would do that so I will say it now. Had the 7 bolt, trashed the 6 bolt due to timing belt so it was a cheap fix.

Any ideas as to what would cause this? It almost seems like the torque converter is binding up when the car is downshifting and wants to die because of it.

what did you shim? have you checked your trans fluid? i have seen transmissions shift hard from having too much and too little trans fluid. torque converters will start to seize up when they don't have enough fluid.

i would just start out by checking the basics.
