Wasn't sure where to post this so I put it in Newbie Section. Anyway, my car has just started to randomly not crank. All lights are on, but when you turn the key, nothing happens. It can happen in the morning or after I just drove it somewhere. If I wait a day or so and come back, it will fire right up as though nothing happened.

The only code that is showing is a code 0022 for a Crank Angle Sensor. I don't see how that could be causing this problem though, as when it occurs, the car doesn't even try to start or turn over.

Also, it never dies. If it decides to start up, it runs perfect with no issues. I can turn it off. Go into the gym and come back 30 minutes later, turn the key to start it, and wham, nothing. It also, can't be jumped and the ECU is also rebuilt with DSMLink.

Any direction or help is appreciated as I am stumped and don't think replacing the CAS is going to help.

UPDATE: It is for sure something to do with the Crank Angle Sensor. I waited until the issue came back, cleared the code, tried to start the car, and it came right back. Will update again once I install a different sensor. I also checked the wiring, and it looked fine.

I won't be able to get the part for at least a few days, but yeah I'll probably end up doing that anyway.

Any other thoughts or anyone with similar issues and solutions?

key off. remove you negative battery lug and clean it. clean the ground on the fire wall and the transmission. remove the positive battery cable clean the lug and the battery poal. disconnect the positive battery wiring harness where it connect to the battery lug. clean and re tighten . double check every connector. good luck.

^+1. If the starter doesn't even turn the engine you have a large battery cable connection problem or weak battery. Or if no voltage is getting to the starter, you could have a bad starter relay, ignition switch (start position), clutch position switch, or theft alarm.

Did this one already. Also, tried to jump it when this problem happens, it will not jump. Still will not even try to crank. Lights on dash never dim or change even when not being jumped. This leads me to believe it's not a battery or cable issue.

Actually going to replace the starter relay tonight and hope that helps but I thought relays and switch are either bad or not. This is random and when it does turn over it starts immediately, as in only 1 or 2 cranks. Clutch position switch is disconnected. No theft alarm.

No - relays and switches can get intermittant also. The starter relay is normally closed. It activates (opens the circuit to disable starter) if the clutch pedal is not pressed. You disconnected the clutch switch so the relay can never activate (so starter should always be enabled). However the current still flows through the relay's closed contacts and if they get bad or intermittant, the starter will not run (starter solenoid gets no power).

Try removing the starter relay and jumper the black-yellow to the black-red and try starting. If it works just leave it that way as you don't need the starter relay. If it still doesn't work (and you have voltage there when starting), you have an intermittant starter or bad connection between there and the starter (where that wire connects to the starter is also a notorously loose connection and may be your problem). Note that black-red becomes a black-yellow before reaching the starter.

That is some great advice. I will update after I try it to help others who experience similar issues.

UPDATE: Bypassed and replaced the Starter Relay with no results. This problem seems influenced by the weather outside as well. If it's cold it starts fine, but when the car is warmed up or it is warmer outside (higher than say 50 degees) the problem occurs. I am pretty stumped. I also hear what sounds like a low whirring noise when it won't crank?

Going to replace the starter and see if that gets me anywhere. Seems odd that it would be the problem but I'm out of ideas.

2nd UPDATE: Replacing the starter with a known good one seems to have fixed the issue for now. The only thing I can come up with as to the intermittent issue is the starter solenoid in the other one was faulty. Thanks everyone for your help. Please wait to mark this as resolved for another couple of weeks. I will report back if is does or does not happen again.

3rd UPDATE: Haven't had a problem since replacing the starter. It was either the starter or starter solenoid. Thanks again everyone for the assistance.
