ok my dimmer switch recently went out so i pulled a good working one from my parts car and it works but it got REAL HOT REAL QUICK i mean it put a blister on my finger hot  ran my gauges from my cig lighter light unhooked them and it still does the same thing WTF does any wisemen out there know what could be the cause of this problem and how i can fix it

Something is pulling current. Thats where the heat is coming from. Could be some wiring you did, could be a nick in a wire shorting somewheres, or a poor connection that has come uncovered. Could be another faulty switch, unusual, but possible. Got a multi meter and know how to use it?

the dimmer is a rheostat, when you dim the dash it just turns the extra voltage into heat like a variable resistor. like he said above you have a short. if it got hot real quick it is a short to ground. pull it out and bypass it, then turn the lights on and run around the car and see which light or lights arent working or are dimm

I found my problem. One of my wires to the switch was pinched and shorting out, took about 2 min to fix. Thank you for all the help
