Have been having troubles getting the car to start I think I have narrowed it down to spark but I'm not sure.

91 TSI

Right now I borrowed my friend 90 ECU, swapped the 2 wires, cranks and once in a while ill get a pop like when I very first hit the key but that's it. I replaced the coil didn't help. I did notice on my SAFC and by watching the spark plugs it only sparks like 1 time when I first hit the key then I get nothing?

On the SAFC when it first starts cranking it'll jump up rpms then after like 1 second it goes to 0 and doesn't move? Does this sound like CAS? Another faulty computer? Power transistor?

Hmm, okay I just went and pulled a plug and laid it on the valve cover while cranking and it seemed to spark ok and keep sparking. Plugs seemed a little wet put new plugs in still no start. What could it be?

One last question is there a way to test the power transistor?
Will one from a 1990 plug into a 91 harness?
And is there a way to turn the fuel pump on constant to make sure that's not my problem.

im prett sure those links are long dead.... but yah I think I have it figured out on my own but it never hurts to double, tripple check with out people before cutting int a harness :)

You think those links are long dead.. Perhaps you should check them first.

Steve do you know how to wire in a 90 power tr?

Of course I do, I just don't see why I should spend my time, yet again, when you don't seem to be willing to spend yours looking to answer your questions.

I've suggested that the answers are here if you'll look for them.
If you just looked in the Tech Archives you would have found: :hmm:

http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/art...4-ecu-swap-into-1990-dsm-ignition-wiring.html

And while it does refer to some old links that are not always up, it also lists exactly what each pin on both power transistors are which is more than enough to address your question.

Or this one to answer your original question.

There is no way I'd hack up my harness to put the 90 junk on the car. There are lots of 91+ PTM available either new or used.

already have viewed all of those links hahah :) Guess I will just try it.... and yah I have searched for two weeks on this cursed car.. I have owned 50 dsm's and not have had this bad of luck..

What your forgetting is that you can install the CAS two ways, one of which is wrong. It's then 180 cam degrees or 360 degrees at the crank putting the timing events on the wrong stroke. While that's not a big deal for the ignition due to the wasted spark firing each plug every 360 degrees but it is an issue for the injector timing.

Your right Steve, and my bad, I was going off of my 2ga CAS which is stationary..

I havnt been familiarized with the 1g/6 bolt yet. I will be starting tomorrow tho! I just threw a rod in my talon yesterday ;( and I got a 6 bolt Im gonna drop in there :)

UPDATE the car starts! I wired in the 90 CAS and it fired right up. Now I have to figure out why when its cold it bogs and dies if I give it gas. Once it warms up it kinda snaps outa it. I know for a fact it needs timed and who knows what else.

The tach does not work either, but I'm going to probly wire back in the 91 coil and power transistor since I don't think it was the problem.

Steve the ECU however is bad so I'm going to send it to you hopefully you can fix it!

Thanks for the help guys now on to 900 other problems!

Ugghhh, I knew it was gonna be the last thing on my list to replace because I have the same Problem. Steve did an awesome job on my ECU even tho it was mint condition. He replaced my capacitors cause I heard they are leak prone and he socketed it for me and great pricing with fast return time :thumb:

Well I'm glad I stumbled on this thread. Hello eBay here I come for a new used CAS :(
