I know that this has been covered before and I have searched and read the other threads on crushing or doing the dodge garage mod. Although as I read through them I get more opinions then what is best for my setup. So I would like to ask a few questions. I am looking to get a uncrushed bov at the moment just so I can start new

I am running a big16g and pushing 17-19psi

My question is though...should I crush it and do the mod..or just do one or the other?
I would rather have a woosh sound then an annoying sputter. From what I understand doing the Dodge Garage Mod makes it have more of a woosh? Anyone speak from experience? But then again I will take performance over sounds anyday. I just want to know what would be the best for my car in general. :thumb:

Well right now I have a TurboXS BOV and I dont even know if you want to call it a BOV because its just a pecie of crap in my opinion. So I am planning on buying a new one so I can't really do a leak test right now :) I am just wondering if I should do the garage mod..or crush..or both

I haven't heard much of the turboXS BOV but as long as it doesn't leak and opens when it's supposed to, then I wouldn't worry about trying to get another one. That's up to you though. Just know that our stock BOV's aren't meant to hold much past stock boost and that's why people upgrade to an aftermarket one.

Well the TurboXS isnt really working right...it has a leak and doesnt open and close right and you have to oil the piston and its just a pain. I thought I have heard people say they can run 25psi on a crushed. Am I wrong?

how much psi are you planning on running?

I guess the real question is do you want to do this mod to make it have a fancy sound or to hold ___ amount of psi?

I had a crushed 1g bov on my car with my small 16g @ 18 psi. No boost leaks (from the valve anyway) and it worked well. Keep in mind I was on a small 16g though. I don't know about the "dodge garage mod". Never tried it. Are you recirculating your bov or dumping it to the atmosphere?

I am deffinatly planning on recuircing it. I am planning on running around 17-19psi..like I said in my first post. I wouldnt mind having it sound nice..but I want performance first

What did it sound like with the crushed 18psi on the small16g?

Crushing the stock BOV let's you run more boost since the stock one will start to leak when you bump the boost up. I'd do a boost leak test to find out when your BOV starts leaking.

crushing a 1g bov is neanderthal... this guy is discussing doing the dodge garage modification not doing some monkey mechanics and putting a part in a vice and "crushing it to spec".

To the OP if you want to do it right and have a bov that can be returned to "stock" at any time, use the dodge garage method. Yes it's a little bit harder to do, but most things in life that are worth a shit are. You don't need to crush it AND do the dg mod. The dg mod is sufficient in it's own right and you don't need to "damage" anything to do it.

"Crush it until it holds a penny in between the valve body and the vacuum nipple"... how ridiculous is that? I know it may have been tried and true back in the day before people actually did some THINKING to figure out a way to make the bov hold more boost, but this is 2007 people... and we're not v8 mechanics. You don't fix things by banging on them and crushing them.

LOL ROFL

So if I do the garage mod it will be able to hold the psi i am pushing..what is the max that it can hold uncrushed and garage modded? Just making sure I am understanding this right. Also...thank you...this is more of the answer I was looking for.

Crushing a 1g BOV is retarded. Doing the dodge garage mod is quick and easy. Not only that you can reverse it if you ever needed to.

There is someone running 60 PSI on the stock 1g BOV with no problem. The dodge garade mod is hands down the best thing to do to the BOV.

Thank you very much. I now know what I will do..that garage mod. Now just one last question. Just out of curiosity now that I have the best descision performance wise. What kind of sound does it make...I dont want it to be ultra loud..but I dont want it to be completely quite either. I know it depends on how much PSi and what not but what is the average sound? Not that I am going to change it either. Just wondering though.

a 1g bov after the garage mod sounds like a cracking whip (if that makes any sense). its really quick. Mine is loud but i have all hard piping and my return tube is like 2 inches so there is no room for it to dampen the sound. Either way it sounds BAD ASS!!! (not ricey)

While I encourage TDDG mod, there is something easier you should try first.

Get some thick gasket material from the parts store (I used cork), use an exacto knife and cut out a gasket the same as the stock gasket except only partially cut out one piece of the internal rectangle. That partially cut part will squeeze into and seal the hole that the mod changes, keeping the lifting boost pressure from seeing the diaphragm.

If you find you don't like having that hole plugged, you can simply flip the gasket around. I found that it would not blow off @ 8-10psi with the hole plugged, so be careful.

If for any reason the gasket leaks or it doesn't perform the way you want it to, you simply put the stock gasket back in, and do TDDG mod. You're only out $2.00 and 20 minutes of your time :D

The 1g @ 16-20psi was MUCH louder than my turboxs RFL @ 16psi. I dunno why, maybe it was the position, but I could hear the 1G from 1/4 mile away. Neither were recirculated.

What did it sound like with the crushed 18psi on the small16g?

My crushed valve sounded like a "retarded owl" if that is imaginable.... I would HIGHLY NOT recommend doing the crush mod. imagine a whoo sound (like an owl makes) only with a slight whistle at the end. It's pretty ricer but I was only 17 when I did that and I thought having a bov was cool. I now run the tial 50mm. If you want to keep the 1g do the Dodge Garage mod, or the buy the dejon kit. Sorry for the slow repsonds

-Ciao

I have a question on the Dodge Garage 1G BOV mod. How do I hook it up?

Like this wonderful picture I made using my leet MS Paint skilz? Where the BOV line from the manifold feeds the top nipple normally and the bottom nipple is supplied pressure from the turbo. And this produces the "quick" opening of the BOV?

Also how "deep" do you need to drill 3/16th verticle hole? Just to the diagram but not through it?

I'm on stock boost, and I'll probably sound like a ricer but if I do the dodge garage mod on my 1g BOV, will I have more of a sound? :)

Sorry to "thread-jack" if I'm doing so.

From my understanding, the dodge garage bov mod opens the bottom of the diaphragm to atmospheric pressure instead of seeing pressure from the IC pipe. This holds the valve closed tighter as the boost pressure rises, allowing a LOT of boost to be run without leaking.

IIRC, the 1g BOV normally has both sides of the diaphragm pressurized, so when the throttle is closed, the pressure below the diaphragm helps push it up/open.

The way you have it set up in your leet MS paint diagram is putting it back to the stock "quick opening" configuration, not the high boost holding config.

Also, you don't need to drill the vertical hole at all, just tap it for a 10-24 x 3/16" set screw.(3/16" long, not diameter)
